About us

innovation • regeneration • transformation shedkm is an innovative RIBA registered architectural practice working from liverpool, manchester + london. our work is rooted in regeneration. our distinctive approach results in bold, engaging schemes which are economically and socially transformative. shedkm practice socially responsive design. Our work demonstrates a people-first approach to placemaking, creating vibrant neighbourhoods and long-term social sustainability. we deliver innovation through strategic commercial thinking, a strong design rationale and modern construction methods deployed for speed and efficiency. our enterprising approach challenges design assumptions to add value for clients and end users. rigorous, rational yet playful, our ideas give buildings and places a strong identity which helps realise both commercial and social ambitions. building on the strengths and emotional connections inherent in the built and social fabric of a city, our thoughtful interventions create a rich and sustainable sense of place. each scheme is considered as a piece of the city, the spaces between as important as the individual buildings in expressing heritage, community and place. from our studios in london and liverpool, where we were established 25 years ago, we continue to be at the forefront of regenerative placemaking, with a UK-wide portfolio of transformational schemes, and vibrant new city neighbourhoods rooted in the historic urban grain. creating desirable places in which people want to live and work, impacts the economic viability of development and unlocks long-term commercial opportunity. shedkm works in partnership with clients to offer flexibility, pragmatism, and a proactive approach to problem solving. we are adept at working within the constraints of tight urban sites or limited budgets, maximising opportunities within a brief to add value.

it's been another fruitful few weeks for our education atelier. this week Claire Elisabeth Yates hosted a student workshop in our liverpool studio, following a Regeneration Brainery design session last year. this workshop gave a deep dive into the process into becoming a licensed architect, as well as a look into cvs and portfolios from our team.   and in this video: https://lnkd.in/eNVtS768 two PLACED academy students, who took part in social value sessions around our grove street scheme, speak about the importance of hands on engagement within the industry.

A retrofit revolution As the doors open at MIPIM in an overcast Cannes I’m eager to see how the property community reacts to a similarly, slightly overcast economic environment. However, I am optimistic as challenge always drives innovation. With a big focus across the property event’s stages on urban renewal, sustainability and ESG-driven investments should retrofit be our key driver for change? Not just our building stock but our towns and cities. Five years since the start of covid lockdown we quickly need to find new purpose for offices, high streets and even towns. Over the last thirty years shedkm has led the charge on innovative retrofit projects with pioneering and insightful clients with projects like Fort Dunlop, Chimney Pot Park and Crusader Works. Now with a new wave of enthusiasm we’re finding conversations turning to bigger and bigger challenges. Today, whilst still tackling existing buildings we’re breathing new life into overlooked communities and underutilised places. Retaining existing structures within our schemes not only saves carbon but gives a place an authenticity and heritage that is hard to replicate. Equally, working with existing communities too enriches our new neighbourhoods. With pressures to deliver growth and housing lets talk about retrofit of our towns and buildings as our default priority.

Today at MIPIM, Liverpool BID Company is showcasing a new film exploring the opportunities for investors in the Commercial District. Hearing from vital businesses within the area including Sony Playstation, Avison Young │ UK, Taylor Wessing UK, shedkm, Gleeds and Liverpool Waters, we reflect on how the CBD has evolved post-pandemic, seeing a younger workforce, a larger residential population and an ambition to create dynamic workspaces. Bill Addy, Chief Executive of Liverpool BID Company and Director of the Global Business Districts Innovation Club, adds: “Business Districts play a unique role in the modern city, connecting the private and the public sector to attract investment and shout about opportunity. At MIPIM, we will have a focus on Liverpool’s Commercial District, hearing from vital businesses within the area including Sony, Avison Young, Taylor Wessing and Liverpool Waters to discuss the investment potential in the area. Its character has changed post pandemic, we see a far younger workforce in the Commercial District, with a much higher density of residential population and the leisure and nightlife demands that come with that. It is a time of opportunity for global investors to see Liverpool as a place for the future”. lighthouse church is in the running for a RIBA North West award! ⛪ 🏆 our associate Darren Jones featured on BBC Radio Merseyside yesterday speaking about his work on the project: https://lnkd.in/eUi4-XKr he said: “we are absolutely thrilled that lighthouse church has been shortlisted for a RIBA north west award. this is a really special project and one that grew out of detailed conversations with church members – experiencing first-hand their ethos of hospitality and community service, hearing their vision of being at the heart of the community and translating that into a building which engages with the high street and invites people in. as a local resident myself, it has been a delight to see the transformational impact the building has had on the church and the wider community already.” read more about the project and shortlist here: https://lnkd.in/e6ycAXg6 #riba #ribanorthwest #award
