Reflecting on the year that was—from a personal, local, professional, and global lens—both shadow and light come to mind. Humanity is still actively harming the living systems on which all life depends, and marginalized and Indigenous communities continue to bear the brunt of these impacts. #COP29 demonstrated one glaring truth: while some decisions require negotiation, there is no debate about the melting point of ice. Nature’s laws are immutable, and yet, we continue to act as if they’re subject to human terms. The question remains—when will we finally learn to respect them? Held in an oil-dependent nation, Rich countries hemmed and hawed over the $2.4 trillion needed for climate finance, while carbon markets dominated the conversation. #COP16 (CBD - Cali, Colombia): The 30x30 target? Still more talk than action. Biodiversity continues to take a backseat to economic and agricultural expansion, proving once again that profit often trumps preservation. COP16 (UNCCD - Riyadh, Saudi Arabia): A fossil fuel giant leading desertification talks—it would be laughable if it weren’t so tragic. Promises of funding for land restoration remain empty, while the push for carbon capture feels more like an excuse to extract more oil. It’s time to stop perpetuating these crises by trying to fix problems with the same logic that created them—capitalism, reductionism, and industrial systems. These very structures caused the ecological, social, cultural, and economic destruction we’re now scrambling to address. The truth is, the system isn’t broken, it’s working exactly as it was designed. And that’s the problem. If we truly want change, we need to rethink everything: from how we value nature to how we define progress. 🌍Although I won’t be attending #COP29, the significance of this conference for global climate action is undeniable. Watching from afar, I am both inspired and concerned about the direction we are taking in addressing the climate crisis. Critical Points for Consideration: 1️⃣ #Unfulfilled #Promises: Every year, we hear renewed pledges from governments, but we must ask – are these promises being translated into real, measurable change? Too often, vulnerable regions, especially in developing countries, do not see the impact of these global commitments. 2️⃣ #Climate #Finance #Disparities: While discussions on climate finance continue to dominate, the focus often leans more towards mitigation rather than adaptation. Countries in the global south, particularly those facing immediate climate impacts, need more than just words. We need actions that prioritize resilience, adaptation, and equitable distribution of resources. 3️⃣ #Youth and #Community #Representation: I’ve always believed that grassroots movements and young voices are key to long-term climate solutions. However, their representation in global spaces like COP29 often feels symbolic rather than substantive. If we’re truly committed to tackling climate change, these voices need to be heard where decisions are being made. 4️⃣ #ClimateJustice: The intersection of climate change and inequality is a pressing issue, particularly in my home region, Karamoja. Vulnerable communities are feeling the brunt of climate impacts, yet they contribute the least to global emissions. It’s time the world took a justice-centered approach that uplifts these communities, providing them with the resources and support needed to adapt. 5️⃣ #Innovation with #Access: #COP29 will no doubt feature groundbreaking innovations. However, the real question remains – how can these technologies be scaled and made accessible to those who need them most? Without inclusive strategies, we risk leaving the most vulnerable behind. At the heart of COP29’s agenda are ambitious goals: securing a new climate finance target, enabling stronger climate action for all countries, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and building resilient communities. Finance will take center stage, with a focus on supporting developing nations in their transition to clean energy and addressing climate impacts. The presidency has introduced 14 transformative initiatives, covering critical areas such as climate resilience, clean energy, sustainable agriculture, methane reduction, and green digital action. These priorities aim to align climate action with sustainable development goals while fostering innovation and inclusivity. 🌍 **Reflecting on 29 Years of COP: Progress, Missed Targets, and the Urgency of Now** 🌍 This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Conference of the Parties (COP), which began as a landmark initiative to unite global efforts in combating climate change. The aspirations were clear: **to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development** to safeguard the planet for future generations. Is it going to be Similar Talks or Have a real deal? Over the years, COP has seen some notable achievements: ✅ *Global Climate Agreements*: The Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement set legally binding targets, holding nations accountable. ✅ *Rising Awareness*: COP has elevated climate discussions to the forefront, driving awareness and commitment from governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide. ✅ *Technological Advancements*: We’ve seen innovations in clean energy, carbon capture, and sustainable practices, with more companies integrating ESG principles. However, we've also faced significant setbacks: ❌ *Emissions Are Still Rising*: Despite commitments, many countries have not met their emissions targets. CO₂ levels and fossil fuel use continue to increase. ❌ *Slow Implementation*: Ambitious pledges often lack the actionable plans or resources needed for real impact, stalling progress. ❌ *Disproportionate Impacts*: Vulnerable populations and ecosystems are experiencing the harshest effects, highlighting the need for more inclusive climate solutions. **Why Now?** The effects of climate change are no longer a distant threat. Rising sea levels, extreme weather, and loss of biodiversity are intensifying, posing immediate risks to economies, communities, and ecosystems. “It’s time for governments, businesses, and individuals to shift from pledges to tangible actions “ .. this does not mean anything unless we have a legally binding framework such as .. retrospectively applying ‘cross default’ clause on .. respective government bond and/or loan exposures ( loan market associations documents ) with a targeted GHG emissions (a transparent emission reduction for next 3-5 year @1.5 degree scenario) and a efficient rollout of crossboder Tax regime ‘Carbon Tax’ .. of course Regulators , Banks including Large Investment firms ( holding trillions of dollars - asset under management) to be monitored for Tangible transitions and effective Pillar 1 Capital for all level of emissions !

COP29 : My Demands to Address the Climate Crises. COP29 is starting,as a climate action advocate here is what I want the leaders to hear : Support Indigenous Communities :Safeguard their rights and knowledge to preserve biodiversity and protect our planet . Climate Financing Now :Invest in renewables ,protect forests and fund sustainable agriculture to slow climate change. Enough is Enough:Older generations from the Global North have had their share of industrial revolutions and luxuries .Now it’s our turn .We don’t want to take over ,we just want to save our future. We Demand to be Heard :For decades , the Global North has enjoyed development,growth and convenience at the plante’s expense.Now it’s time to listen to those who didn’t benefit from that but are being forced to clean up the mess. Hold Polluters Accountable : Tax the big polluters to fund climate solutions. A new COP has concluded, and #COP29 has left more doubts than concrete certainties about the governments and corporations actions are taking to address climate change. One of the key outcomes was the announcement of new funding aimed at helping countries protect their citizens and economies against climate disasters. This includes support for developing nations, amounting to $300 billion by 2035. Furthermore, there was an ambitious proposal to secure the collective effort of public and private actors with the purpose to finance climate actions, with a target of $1.3 trillion by 2035. While such financial commitments sound promising on paper, the overarching response to the global climate crisis seems to remain focused on monetary aspects, with a glaring absence of clear and actionable mitigation strategies on the horizon. Regarding other agreements, certain points were reached that, in my view, should have been on the table at least five years ago to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Instead, we are stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of debates about energy transition, carbon markets, and transparency reports on climate adaptation. Yet again, there is an evident lack of willingness particularly from developed nations to propose concrete actions for reducing CO2 emissions and implementing specific climate measures. To add to this, only two #G20 countries, #Brazil and the #UK, outlined concrete climate actions in their Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs). But what about #China, #USA, and #India? These three nations are not only the largest emitters of #CO2 but also home to 39% of the global population. Against this backdrop, with the apparent lack of commitment from governments and industries, the #SDGs seem to face an increasingly black horizon for being achieved by 2030. It raises the question: ¿Are the COPs truly serving their purpose, or have they become grand networking events for the self-congratulation of so-called environmental and sustainability “experts”?
