Here are some fun and engaging ideas to get you started: 🍻 Dinner at the local pub: Enjoy a counter meal and discuss what interests everyone. Add a speaker or a demonstration to make the evening even more engaging. 🌿 Farm tour and picnic: Organise a visit to a local farm followed by a picnic. This is a great way to learn about innovative practices while enjoying the outdoors. 🏞️ Workshop at a community centre: Host a hands-on workshop on a relevant topic, such as sustainable agriculture or digital marketing for farmers. 📚 Book club meeting: Select a book related to extension work or agriculture and gather for a lively discussion over coffee. In 2014, we introduced the APEN Support for Regional Events Program, providing grant money and seed funding to help initiate and run local events. Nature can inspire your leadership approach! So grateful for the work by Dr Kathy Allen which has both affirmed and influenced a shift in my leadership approach. As someone who’s had the honor and responsibility to lead systems change in health and human services one quote in her book affirmed and expanded my thinking as she challenges us to think of organizations as living systems versus mechanistic ones: “Living systems only accept solutions that the system helps to create”! Seems simple - but we can loose sight of this so easily. As you step into your day and have the opportunity to lead in a conversation, as problem or solution are being formed, a challenge being explored - consider how well you’re cocreating with those most deeply affected and ensure to what is meaningful in the here and now. #naturematters #natureconnectedleadership

One thing I've always admired about GFI is that even though we've grown pretty quickly for a nonprofit, we only add new roles when it's absolutely clear that there's a full slate of work for that role. And every time a role is vacated, we pause and ask whether backfilling it is necessary, or has the ecosystem evolved such that those resources would be better deployed toward a different role? One way that philosophy shows itself is in the amount that we accomplish in a year with a global staff that's only around 200 people. Our 2023 Year in Review is just a tiny, tiny snapshot of everything we had a hand in (and much of our work is behind the scenes working directly with stakeholders, where those efforts might be years in the making before some splashy, broadcast-worthy milestone is reached), and yet it's astounding to me that an org of this size does it. There's not a single person I can think of on staff that makes me scratch my head and say, "wait, what exactly does this person do to advance our work?" I'm always reminded how unique this is when I talk with people at other organizations or agencies where there are mind-boggling levels of bureaucracy, hierarchy, processes, etc. No doubt we have more of that than when we were a scrappy little <10-person nonprofit, but it feels like we've resisted the default slide toward inefficiency or impact-dilution at every possible turn. Anyways, all that to say, our 2023 Year in Review is live! Check it out! 🎉 Happy Birthday, Roots Down 🎉 Six years ago today, I received a letter from the IRS with my EIN number, and Roots Down was officially in business. I didn’t know exactly what the journey would look like, but I knew what I wanted to achieve. Looking back, I’m in awe of the incredible path we’ve taken. Roots Down has been a source of inspiration and transformation for sure. Our work has made libraries in DeKalb cleaner and greener spaces for the community and your roadways more colorful with wildflowers and so much more... The impact extends beyond Roots Down—people like Miranda Rupkey and Sonia Tyler, who have worked with us, are now making a significant difference in DeKalb County, dedicating their efforts to improving the world around us. Also, to amazing partners Kim Bucciero and Tres Crow for aiding in the success and giving your blood sweat and tears over the years, A warm thank you. Through our program, countless GreenHivers and interns have learned about local solutions to climate change, sharing their wisdom and helping me grow along the way. Reflecting on all we’ve accomplished over the past six years truly makes my head spin. Like, Did you know that we now have a thriving non profit?? We do its the Fruitful Community Foundation, please check them out. With all the environmental challenges we face, staying focused can be tough—sometimes I feel like a golden retriever in a yard full of tennis balls! Someone pointed out, I’ve been beating the same drum for a long time, and that’s certainly true and I will continue to do so! Our mission Roots Down is simple: to connect our communities more deeply with nature and to become a driving force for regenerative practices. This journey is far from over, and I’m thrilled about what the next six years will bring. We have a lot of work ahead, but the progress we’ve made gives me immense hope. As you know well, environmental and community health issues are complex and too big to tackle alone.  That’s why ICL supports collaborative efforts that together can solve the complex issues. Recently, our board members reflected on “the magic” that ICL brings to collaborations. From their experience with ICL, they said ICL helps collaborations get “unstuck” and have greater impact. "ICL knows how a network works. We can't do everything all at once. So, let's go understand where there's energy, and let's nurture that energy. And they are not overly prescriptive about it. They tap into the group’s potential and their sense of direction." "When I'm talking to ICL folks you end up with a lot of nodding of heads, and then you get to a resolution on things. And I think part of it is because of ICL’s non-profit background, there is that synergy. By asking the right question, the staff member drew that out. That can be hard to do. So really--it is magic." Come with us on a site visit!   Last week, CFF visited 4Roots in Orlando’s Packing District to learn more about the innovative efforts happening at their new campus. Founder and CEO John Rivers spoke to our group about the power of a strong local food system, and touched on its impact on overall health (both humans and the planet) and our local economy.🍅   The work happening here creates incremental change in Thrive’s Economic Stability Focus Area, plus has positive implications in Healthcare, as well. As Central Florida’s philanthropic experts, part of our work is knowing our community.
