Yesterday, we had the pleasure of organising a closed-doors breakfast discussion on NECPs with members of the EU27 Permanent Representations to the EU, co-hosted with our member Bellona Europa.
A great discussion with representatives of national governments, it was a reminder of the importance of NECPs and action at the national level to #MakeCCSHappen.
Some of the key points raised include:
🌍Member States must lead: While the EU has ambitious targets for CO2 capture and storage, achieving them will require proactive leadership and investment from individual Member States. Denmark serves as a model with its comprehensive funding, infrastructure, and strategic approach, but other countries lag behind in prioritising CCS within their NECPs.
🗣️Public perception is critical: Public concerns about the safety and viability of CO2 storage—especially onshore—pose significant barriers to scaling up CCS. Effective communication strategies, stakeholder engagement, and transparent sharing of technical data at local and national levels are essential to build trust and acceptance.
🔗Policy and Funding gaps need to be addressed: National policies often lack the dedicated funding mechanisms and legal frameworks necessary to support full CCS value chains. Revising the EU ETS to incentivise negative emissions, and addressing gaps in cross-border transport and storage regulation are pivotal steps to accelerate CCS adoption.
