Thoughts on the 2023 St. Mary's University of Minnesota Annual Career & Internship Fair As a Junior here at St. Mary's, I put my continued networking skills to the test and talked to some extraordinary companies, who were fortunately enough, searching for possible interns for this next summer. Sharing demographics, job specialties, and career journeys with some of these employers was an eye-opening experience to be able to grasp the idea of what a possible internship may look like as I compared different environment types between companies. Three companies I was fortunately able to meet and discuss a possible future within the internship industry were Hormel Foods, Metro Sales INC, and Northwest Mutual Bank. Beyond chatting with these fantastic employers, I was able to pick up some knowledge on career expansion. Whether this be changes in work location based on preference or specific job title transfers. Specifically, Hormel Foods pitched their dynamic ability to adapt to employee preference and help interns possibly switch job specifics or industries if their experience wasn't what they were expecting. This was something I found of value in my continued search for future internship opportunities! Starting off Business Week 2023 at NKU Haile College of Business with Bailey Moses at the Internship Lab! We learned about what companies are looking for, putting ourselves out there and tips for the Career Fair! We were able to talk with Justin Stewart, JD, CFE from Western & Southern and Nicolette M. who offered us insight into the workforce & internships! I was able to learn so much about HR, looking for HR internships, and setting goals! As a Computer Science student undergrad, I have attended the career fair in Arizona State University for internships coming summer, where the companies recruit eligible interns and give them an amazing learning experience, all the companies that are there in the career fair and their employees helped us understand the skills we need to be an intern, job market, resume building and many more, even though I was not an eligible intern since I am a freshman, still going to career fair and talking to the employees of the company and networking with fellow like minded people have helped a lot, and it is always amazing to explore things. I feel that I need to work more on my skills to be eligible for the internships, and to have an amazing learning experience, overall I feel that internship is a very important opportunity for a college student as it will give an idea and exposure for the college student before he does the job after graduation, and the experience of working as an intern in a company and our micro work impacting in real world at a macro level is surely a thing that is worth doing.

Me in 2019:  Showed up to my college career fair in pajamas, got rejected from 47+ internships Me in 2023: 👉 Went to 23+ investor meetings in pajamas 👉 Fundraised VC $$$ in a unicorn onesie 👉 Posting to 22k+ people on Linkedin in pajamas How I turned things around for myself: I changed…  Nothing. I got out of college. I stopped job hunting.  I simply switched “locations”: I changed where I was bringing my authentic self. My pajamas may not have won me internships in college- but now I hire interns while I sit and work in my pajamas. Sometimes YOU don’t need to change.  Sometimes you’re just in the wrong place. For anyone else who feels out of place right now,  Know this: A water bottle’s price is different in a grocery store vs. on an airplane. Even though… it’s just water in both places. The difference?  Its location. Its placement.  Its perceived value. Moral of the story:  Stick to being your authentic self.  There are places out there in the world that value you for you. #authenticity #changenothing

We’re here to share that it is still very possible for you to get a summer internship! Here some things we recommend: 1. Go to all the career fairs in your community (for example, hit up NYC networking events if you can make a small day trip) 📚 2. Join the Product Haven Slack to see what companies are still recruiting 👀 (comment “Slack” to be added) 3. Apply to roles outside of your specific niche 👩🏻💻 4. Practice by doing or watching mock interviews. One of the best youtube channels for mocks is Exponent! 🗣️ Follow Product Haven to stay updated on what we have coming in the next few months!
