On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending the Blue Springs Chamber Lunch & Learn, where the focus was on empowering often-overlooked talent pools in our workforce. Each panelist detailed their experience working with these individuals and the benefits it had to both the company and the employee. Thank you to the panelists Bobby Hines, Corey Martin, and Karvel Kofoed for their insight on such an important topic. Bobby shared insightful perspectives on how businesses can create opportunities for justice-involved individuals, providing them a second chance and benefiting from their dedication and untapped potential. Providing a justice-involved individual a second chance not only fills critical roles in the workforce but also helps uplift our community by fostering growth and inclusion. Corey emphasized the immense value that veterans bring to the workplace. With their keen eye for detail, veterans are trained far beyond the capabilities of most civilians. They excel in teamwork, know how to follow directions precisely and adapt quickly to dynamic situations. It's important to create pathways for their successful transition back into civilian careers and by doing so businesses can fully leverage these unmatched skills. Karvel talked about the value of “experienced” or post-retired professionals, pointing out how much knowledge and reliability they bring to the table. Businesses can benefit from their mentorship and the seasoned perspective they offer, especially when it comes to tackling tough challenges. They have a depth of experience that sparks innovation, and their strong work ethic and traditional values lead to a higher level of dedication. Bringing older professionals on board not only strengthens collaboration between generations and boosts company culture, but it also gives them a continued sense of purpose, and belonging, and a way to share their expertise in a meaningful way. Look out for a follow-up to this post next week detailing our experience hiring a post-retired professional! This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusive hiring practices. As businesses, we have the chance to shape a more diverse and resilient workforce by embracing individuals from all walks of life. Let's continue to build teams that not only elevate our businesses but also uplift the broader community. #InclusiveWorkforce #SecondChances #VeteransInBusiness #PostRetirementProfessionals #BlueSpringsChamber

I'm never more convicted about the ingenuity of DEI practitioners than when I hear from them directly, learning how different industries and fields are approaching these challenges. How we address exclusion/inequity challenges in manufacturing, finance, higher ed., you name it, the strategy has to be matched to the needs and opportunities of the clients, the employees and the moment. DEI practitioners are problem finders but they are also problem solvers, hence why it attracts some of the most passionate, inventive and hungry-for-change minds.
The Diversity Consortium recently held two events bringing together leaders and professionals in the diversity and inclusion space to support veterans initiatives in the workplace and ideate and share experiences navigating diversity work in Middle Tennessee. Ignore the media narrative - the work of creating inclusive, productive and fair work environments endures. Kudos to panelists and moderators Brynn Plummer, Cathy C. Lively, Sherry Pickering, LCSW, Lydell Francis, Michael Tate, D'Angelo S. Taylor, Ed.D. and Marie Sueing, our hosts The Mechanical Licensing Collective and everyone who participated for your continued work inside your organizations, your regions of the country and beyond. I can't wait to see what 2025 holds for all of you and this important work! The Diversity Consortium supports the work of practitioners, whether they be people with diversity and inclusion in their title, HR professionals, business or employee resource group leaders or consultants and service providers by providing a platform to network and share resources which elevate model practices for inclusive workplaces. “Hiring employees with neurodiverse backgrounds solves not only the workforce challenges manufacturers have right now but helps us fulfill a value important to Morrison - helping our community. We’d be missing out on valuable contributors to the workforce without embracing workforce initiatives like this that can make a difference in our organizations and the world around us.” Learn more about building neurodiversity within your organization from Ben Schatzel, Founder & Managing Director at Stannum Core Solutions (The Illinois Manufacturer, Page 8). https://ow.ly/LSMC50RCgyX

Many view Donald Trump’s inauguration as solely a U.S. event; however, his previous leadership had a ripple effect that shaped workplace culture globally, including in the UK. His tenure brought polarisation, anti-DEI sentiment, and a spotlight on toxic leadership, compelling HR professionals to act as gatekeepers of ethical leadership, inclusion, and psychological safety. He is actively dismantling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs—going as far as placing all federal DEI staff on leave and planning their layoffs —it’s more crucial than ever to champion these values in our workplaces. As hate speech risks being normalised under the guise of “freedom of speech,” we must remain vigilant. Implementing robust policies, providing comprehensive training, and fostering an inclusive culture are essential steps to ensure our environments remain equitable and welcoming for all. How are you planning to reinforce DEI in your organisation? Let’s share strategies and commitments to keep our workplaces inclusive and fair. 👇🏾 #HR #Leadership #Inclusion #trump #WorkplaceCulture #PsychologicalSafetya
