🏫🌳 Exciting progress at Thoresby Vale, Edwinstowe! In September, Harworth began construction of a new Primary School at our Thoresby Vale development in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, where 800 new homes are being delivered in addition to community amenities and a 350-acre country park, which was opened to the public in the Spring. Over the last 15 weeks, fantastic progress has been made on site despite the recent weather conditions: ✅Timber structures for the Juniors and Early Years pavilions now complete. ✅Low-level masonry well-progressed on the Juniors & Early Years pavilions. ✅Slab and upstand on the admin building complete. ✅Foundations for the hall due to commence shortly following installation and sealing of attenuation tank. In partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council and the Local Education Authority, the new style ‘forest school’, operated by Diverse Academies Trust, will offer a unique educational environment where students can learn and thrive in close connection with nature. The forest school is designed by Lungfish Architects and constructed by principal contractor Stepnell. Opening in September 2025, the school will immerse students in the beauty of the neighbouring Sherwood Forest, providing a nature-filled environment that encourages creativity, mental well-being, and a deep connection to the environment. ⬇️ Watch the timelapse video below for progress to date: #ForestSchool #Education #Wellbeing #Communities #Regeneration

We’re delighted that the application for extensions to Bloxham School’s Dewey Sport Centre, including floodlighting, 5 new netball/tennis courts and parking improvements was approved in line with the officer’s recommendation at the Cherwell Planning Committee yesterday evening. The proposal will deliver a number of significant benefits both to Bloxham School and the local community through the provision of a range of new and enhanced sports facilities. The approval follows extensive engagement with the Cherwell District Council, the Parish Council, Sport England and other local and national stakeholders. This forms part of the Bloxham School masterplan, which will allow the school to significantly upgrade its sporting facilities. The extended building will provide new changing rooms, a large fitness suite and spinning studio, multi purpose space, and a new entrance and arrival space to provide a focal point on the site, whilst also improving security and safeguarding. This project has been long in the making, and it was a real team effort to achieve consent with challenging site context, balancing ecology, landscape, amenity, highways whilst achieving a coherent and functional masterplan vision for the Dewey site. Miriam Owen and Sam Biles from Edgars excelled in managing a complex planning application process, ensuring that all aspects were robustly addressed, supported by David Singleton and Jonathon Emery of DSA Environment + Design Ltd, Cole Easdon highways, HCUK Group and drainage, Nick Bolton Tree Frontiers for Arboriculture, Jacob Hepworth-Bell ecology. #thinkingbuildings #sports #sportsdesign #sportscentres #leisurecentres #education #architects #independantschools #architectsoxfordshire #architectsderbyshire #architectsleicestershire

Planning has been approved for Callander Community Campus by the National Park Planning Authority ✅ The scheme will deliver a vibrant and inclusive campus for Stirling Council that enhances the learner journey from nursery to high school. The new Callander primary school will sit adjacent to Callander Nursery, McLaren High School and McLaren Leisure Centre, creating a new community campus. Chris Malcolm, partner at Ryder, said: "This is a really important project for us within the beautiful setting of the national park, and is a good example of what can be achieved through sensitive engagement and a considered approach to working with context. Having planning consent granted is an important milestone in creating a fantastic learning environment for the pupils of Callander primary, and delivering wider place benefits to the town." #planning #education #architecture

Wonderful to see the next phase of PTE designed infil developments with 14 low energy council homes taking shape. Despite being challenging infil sites, the designs make use of our standardised housetypes, helping to manage costs and simplify construction - making this type of site more viable. As well as providing more council homes, the finished schemes will improve urban design and natural surveillance to the surrounding streets and green spaces. We know there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the housing crisis but we think this kind of repeatable intelligent infil is an important tool in the box. Providing more homes in already developed areas improves densities that help to support local services. Also, as I said in a talk I gave last week, make better use of the space you’ve got - and it’s another green field saved 🌳
At Aragon Close and Sackville Close, we are replacing existing garages and hard standing at each development with seven new two bedroom, low-carbon council homes, designed using Passivhaus principles. The homes will have very low energy use and heating costs, with thick highly insulated walls and gas-free heating. The developments will also provide car parking, landscaping, and cycle storage. Taking cues from how WA is able to scale up workers from our north-west resources or infrastructure projects, here is an accelerator idea to deliver longer-term, permanent living options into Western Australia faster, cheaper, and more sustainably. By providing short-term housing solutions (say 10-15 years) as construction and key worker villages across the Perth metropolitan area, this will then increase the supply of long-term, permanent, and affordable housing, as it will allow for more trades to flow into the industry and therefore more permanent homes to be built. The villages could be provided on under-utilised crown land, or on land in areas such as around new Metronet train stations that currently don’t meet private development hurdle targets to develop now - allowing the land to be put to good use straight away, then sold off and developed by industry in the future when returns improve. This idea could work anywhere else across the country, as long migration opportunities for international key construction workers are also supported by the Federal Government. As a consequence, more workers/construction labor force in the WA market means more competitive pricing of projects, faster delivery of housing, and keeping construction costs down. Furthermore, this is a step closer to being able to move from the 16,000 dwellings currently being delivered annually to the required 25,000 to meet our Federal housing targets. Living in these homes is a short-term accommodation option that will accelerate the delivery of suitable permanent housing options for workers and their families to live in, as more homes are delivered into the WA market and our rental vacancy increases. Let's take advantage of under-utilized land and increase the supply of long-term, affordable housing options. Thank you to Kim Macdonald and The West Australian for the chat.
Perth property leader Kylee Schoonens - WA principal of national architecture firm Rothelowman - has called on the housing industry to follow the lead of the resource sector and create fly-in, fly-out-style worker camps in Perth to accommodate desperately-needed tradies.

Oaktree School has officially received planning permission for a much-needed expansion project. This development addresses the growing demand for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) placements within the London Borough of Enfield. Previously, due to a shortage of local SEND placements, many students had to attend schools in other boroughs, resulting in higher costs and significant disruptions for families. The planned expansion will increase the school's capacity from 137 to 170 pupils and the staff from 55 to 67 members. This will ensure that more children in Enfield can access the quality education and support they need, right in their own community. The project will unfold in several phases, including the construction of new classrooms, a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), and enhanced facilities for both students and staff. #Enfield #SEND #Education Planning Potential Rolton Thomson environmental consultants Cudd Bentley Consulting Ltd Osborn Associates WH Stephens Waterman Group Camlins NOVA Acoustics Ltd The Urban Forest Consultancy
Fantastic to see planning achieved for the redevelopment of Oaktree School in Enfield, a project that has provided the opportunity to develop a landscape that responds to the physical, emotional and learning needs of the children in its care. Blending seamlessly with the existing landscape, the proposals create a series of green spaces that add significant value to the campus through enhanced ecology and the provision of a range of innovative and engaging new facilities. Central to the scheme is the introduction a serene contemplation garden where students and teachers can unwind amongst nature. The newly planted areas throughout the scheme also support existing habitats with the inclusion of features including bird boxes, insect hotels and bat boxes. A landscaped terrace allows students to participate in hands-on learning and self-growing while green roofs on the newly built elements and ‘rain gardens’ have been introduced to provide interactive learning spaces as well as supporting sustainable and urban drainage strategies. 🌟 12 days of Christmas! 🌟 🎄 DAY 7 Wallyford Learning Campus, East Lothian For the seventh day of Christmas we share our project for Wallyford Learning Campus in East Lothian! The school is the first delivered through the Scottish Governments Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP) Phase 1 with funding being dictated on the operational energy usage of the facility. The school is designed to accommodate 950 secondary school pupils and houses a state of the art and dedicated science, technology, engineering and maths (STEAM) centre. The facility also has a dedicated wing to accommodate 50 pupils of severe and complex as well as a specialist provision community hub for adults with complex needs. Within this department lies a hydrotherapy pool. The site of the school and surrounding new town has been subject to substantial historic coal mineral extraction. As such a significant enabling works package was required to stabilise the ground in the form of grouting and mine shaft capping. The building itself was strategically positioned to avoid the known mine shafts on the site. The site falls significantly from north to south and as such dictated a split level ground floor with a 4m high RC concrete retaining wall bisecting the site. The double height sports facilities and games halls were located at this lower level to reduce their dominance on the landscape. To the south of the building is generous landscaped gardens with associated break out spaces. The main structure is a braced steel frame, and composes a series of wings which each join to form a large central and 20m clear span atrium at the heart of the building. This central atrium houses dinning, social space and entertaining zones and is overlooked by a cantilevering science super lab. With the building strategically located centrally on the site this creates external areas that are both welcoming and attractive but provide secure school grounds, with the provision of spaces for teaching and learning. Through the design of the externals and use of landscaping spaces were created that have an immediate positive impact upon arrival and help settle the building into its new town.
