🌱Today, I had the pleasure of attending the event "Organic Food: Good for Farmers, Workers, Climate, and the Environment", where I also had the honor of giving a speech. The event brought together representatives from cities, national governments, and institutions to explore the multiple benefits of organic farming for local communities and the pivotal role of public procurement in creating sustainable food systems.💚 🎂 One of the highlights of the event was celebrating a truly significant milestone: the 100th anniversary of organic farming! 👨🌾In my speech, I emphasized that, beyond its well-known environmental advantages, organic farming also has a profound socio-economic impact. Its knowledge- and labor- intensive nature makes it a valuable driver of high-skill jobs in rural areas, while fostering collaboration among various stakeholders in local communities. I also discussed how sustainable public procurement can play a transformative role in revitalizing rural areas by connecting citizens, public institutions, and farmers. A powerful example of this is the concept of bio-districts, which unites farmers, local authorities, and the private sector to breathe new life into farming communities.🚜 For these reasons, IFOAM Organics Europe is deeply committed to this cause. Together with ICLEI, we continue to coordinate the Task Force on Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP) within the Food Policy Coalition (FPC). 🥗 Meals can be a powerful agent of change: starting with schools, we can cultivate more responsible and sustainable citizens, as well as more vibrant rural communities. A heartfelt thanks to the co-organizers of this event: Organic Cities Network Europe, ICLEI, Buy Better Food, France urbaine, European Economic and Social Committee, and Associazione per l'Agricoltura Biodinamica. #SustainablePublicProcurement #HealthySchoolMeals #SmallPlateBigImpact #MakingEuropeMoreOrganic #SustainableFoodSystems #OrganicFarming

Today, during the event "Organic Food: Good for Farmers, Workers, Climate and the Environment," our Director Eduardo Cuoco, addressed an engaged audience on the role of organic agriculture in driving #sustainability. At the event, which brought together policymakers, local authorities, and food system leaders across Europe, he discussed how #SustainablePublicProcurement (#SPP) can support the transition to a more resilient food system by aligning public spending with environmental, social, and economic sustainability goals. He stressed how #OrganicAgriculture not only protects the environment—improving soil health, water quality, and biodiversity—but also supports social and economic resilience. Organic farmers tend to have more diversified farms, stronger community ties, and often better financial returns than their conventional counterparts. Through public procurement, we can provide them with a stable market and fair income. A key point discussed was how #PublicProcurement can be used as a political tool to revitalise rural areas. By prioritising organic products, governments can stimulate local economies, strengthen rural communities, and foster a circular economy. This also helps bridge the gap between urban consumers and rural producers, contributing to more sustainable regional development. #OrganicsEurope has long advocated for integrating sustainability into public procurement. Together with Organic Cities Network Europe and ICLEI Europe, in the framework of the EU Food Policy Coalition, we developed the Manifesto for Minimum Standards for Public Canteens, which calls for mandatory sustainability criteria for public food systems across Europe. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eSyyByFq We also invite you to explore our infographics on SPP, highlighting key benefits such as: 🌱 Supporting local economies by sourcing organic food locally; 🌱 Driving environmental sustainability through reduced emissions, improved biodiversity, and healthier soils; 🌱 Improving food quality by ensuring healthier meals in schools, hospitals, and public institutions. More here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dXpEvpQt The momentum for SPP is growing across Europe. It’s now crucial to integrate organic standards into public food systems to build a fair, resilient, and sustainable food future. Let’s ensure #PublicMoney works for #PublicGoods —from the environment to social equity — while providing farmers with the support they need to thrive. A big thank you to Organic Cities Network Europe, European Economic and Social Committee, and Associazione per l'Agricoltura Biodinamica for organising the event, and to our partners ICLEI Europe, Buy Better Food, and France urbaine for their collaboration. #EUAgriFood #RuralRevitalisation #HealthyFoodSystems #SmallPlateBigImpact #HealthySchoolMeals
