📢 📢 New publication in Cities: Based on a review of Scottish national planning reforms for vacant land, the paper identifies pathways for greater inclusion of informal and more-than-human placemaking in policy and planning practice. A study led by the talented Imogen Humphris and co-authored with Lummina Horlings. Highlights: 1️⃣ Concepts such as urban biodiversity support inclusion for more-than-human placemaking. 2️⃣ Persistent nature-culture divisions overlook interdependencies, constraining planning debates. 3️⃣ Inclusive planning for vacant land must counter reductivist placemaking perspectives. 4️⃣ Relational placemaking for vacant land should be regenerative, incremental and collaborative. ☘️To whom has interest in the topic, I would like to share two recent publications, respectively in ‘Environment and Planning C’ and in ‘Urban Geography’ journals. Both focus on urban experimentation and governance. While the first is a review of different strands of the #experimentation debate, connecting them with a framework on governance tensions and socio-ecological justice, the second goes into the everyday challenges of implementing Nature-based-solutions´ experiments. Exploring the context of Turin, it delineates governance tactics that different actors put into place to face those challenges, among which leadership and conflict management, intermediation, collaboration and facilitation of maintenance practices, improvisational governance, and engagement in the politics of experimentation. Advancing the field of sustainability-by-doing-less-damage towards environmental stewardship is part of our mission. In the Transeation project, our focus is the blue economy. The growth projections of this part of the economy risk damaging coastal and marine ecosystems on which we all depend. Our contribution in this European funded project is to develop a framework that guides the development of blue economy related infrastructure in such a way that coastal and marine ecosystems can be restored or regenerated while having a positive impact on local communities. After all, the economy is embedded in our environment and in society. What is the point in developing off-shore windturbines if by doing so we damage the ecosystems in which this infrastructure is located? Would it not make sense to make sure that coastal protection infrastructure goes beyond mere protecion and actively restores and regenerates life in our seas? So our starting point is: "What if each time we decide to develop infrastructure, we make sure it is a catalyst for eco-system regeneration?" In an increasingly urban world, rural people, be they Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities or Rural Communities, are increasingly being left behind. Yet, in order to move towards the 2050 vision of “living in harmony with nature”, we need to make sure that no one is left behind. This means that there also needs to be resolutions by various global decision makers to be inclusive and include all rural communities in decision-making processes. Land and resources shared in common among people, and the common land use rights and institutions underpinning common resource use in rural communities, play a decisive role in achieving these goals. From the 9th to the 13 of December 2024 a conference will be convened in Geneva, Switzerland to address the question of sustainable development in European Commons. The conference will attract researchers and practitioners engaged in management of commons from across Europe. It is organised through a partnership between the International Association for the Study of Commons, the ICCA consortium, IUCN, University of Lausanne and NARROW.
