Yesterday, Ilmatar´s offshore team, represented by David Ståhlman and Christian Pleijel, had the honour of hosting Enrika Uusitalo and Jan Willems from the global heavy-lifting and transport company Sarens. They visited Åland to assess the current state of offshore wind power development and explore how their expertise might contribute. “At this early stage, we are here to see if we can leverage our experience and know-how to support the local development work. As a heavy lifting operator, we are no competitor to wind power developers, harbours, or shipping companies, but can collaborate at all levels,” says Enrika Uusitalo. During the visit to Åland, Saren's representatives met with Camilla Gunell, Minister for Infrastructure and Climate Change, as well as with representatives of Eckerö Linjen/Berghamn Harbour, Eriksson Bygg Ab, Ansgar Ab and Alandia Försäkring, among others. “Åland is a small community amidst large-scale energy production development. I believe we have expanded the understanding of what is possible for Åland regarding the benefits of offshore wind power. We have also identified networks and areas where Sarens can be of assistance,” says Jan Willems. #RenewableEnergy #WindPower #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #Ilmatar #WindEnergy #heavylifting #ålandislands

Jan told us about their Fécamp wind park operation, outside Le Havre in France. During 36 hours, Sarens moved 72 gravity 8 MW turbines wighing 4,800 tonnes each, loaded them to barges and shipped them out at sea. They used 120 trucks and two enormous cranes which took 2 months to assemble, and had 150 people engaged almost round the clock for 3 months.  Such an opeartion is also dependent of local support such as small cranes, a good shipyard, workshops, small ships, handy people, engineers, problem-solvers, all kinds of equipment and machines, and accommodation. It was great fun and very fruitful to meet with Sarens.
