The construction industry accounts for 10% of the global GDP, and the UN estimates that buildings account for 35% of carbon dioxide emissions. Developing culturally sensitive structures using environmentally friendly construction materials can minimize their ecological footprint. A study published in the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering, from authors Kerim K., Handan Kunkcu, and Asli Pelin Gurgun, proposes a novel risk management model that identifies the risks associated with green building projects for stakeholders at all stages throughout the projects’ life cycles. In our collaborative effort, we've partnered with ten leading experts in the construction industry and built environment to advocate for the inclusion of manifesto commitments to regulate embodied carbon in the UK, directed towards political party leaders. This initiative holds significance as buildings and construction contribute significantly to UK carbon emissions, a primary factor in driving climate change. With UK policy at a standstill, prompt action is imperative. CIBSE Technical Director, Dr. Anastasia Mylona, says: “Building services account for up to 25% of the embodied carbon of new buildings and up to 75% of retrofit buildings, yet the embodied carbon of MEP products is the least understood and quantified. Recognising the significant impact of building services in the whole life carbon assessment of buildings, CIBSE has published TM65 to provide a methodology to quantify embodied carbon at product level.
