Like almost all agencies, the US Navy does a good job of buying and replacing old technology. Where the DoN, and most others struggle is how to sustain that application or system over the long term. Defense officials from the United States Department of Defense 🇺🇸, #Norway 🇳🇴, and the UK Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧 recently concluded a conference with Naval Special Warfare in Virginia Beach, June 24-27, 2024. The constructive discussions focused on establishing common standards for Arctic-capable forces, optimizing intelligence-sharing practices, and facilitating persistent training and engagements. The three countries noted the need to enhance readiness and effectiveness in addressing evolving operational challenges in the #Arctic and High North. Commander of Naval Special Warfare Command - Navy SEAL & SWCC Teams, Rear Adm. Keith Davids, said “These important partnerships enhance the security cooperation between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway and are crucial for addressing common security threats. The goals set by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti in her new fleet-wide guidance may be tough, but they are realistic, the head of the Navy said. “Today I released my Navigation Plan for America’s Warfighting Navy. “This is my strategic guidance to the fleet and focuses on two strategic ends: 1) Readiness for the possibility of war with the Peoples Republic of China by 2027, and 2) Enhancing long-term advantage. We pursue these ends through two mutually reinforcing ways: 1) Implement Project 33 and 2) Expand Navy’s contribution to the Joint warfighting ecosystem. Cooperation between the allied democracies hasn't been more essential in 80 years. However, when I see these large-scale naval exercises, I think we are fighting the last war, not preparing for the one already upon us. Have we learned nothing from Ukraine? Nothing from our intelligence on China's military development? Grand fleet manoeuvers make excellent targets for Chinese ship-buster missiles and the new class of air, surface, and underwater sea drones. The US carrier group in the Red Sea can't defeat the Houthis. How will the Grand Fleet defeat the China/Russia/Iran axis? A carrier group's operating range is about 500 miles. A Chinese carrier-buster missile has a range of 750 miles. Only one has to hit. And they are much cheaper than a carrier, a naval fighter plane, or a defensive missile. The NATO nations are ramping up their defense spending, and justifiably so. However, a massive percentage of that spending will do nothing to make the free world safer. Indeed, it is a distraction from accelerating the development of the systems that will make the free world safer. Time to wake up. Kudos to Dr. Tom Karako and Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for hosting another most interesting security forum. This week, the spotlight was on #RADM Fred Pyle, N96 on the #CNO's staff at the #Pentagon.
