A Random one. I had the privilege of attending the recent Future of Mining Summit, an event that highlighted both the challenges and progress within the mining sector. A particular moment that stood out to me was a question asked by Gorata during a panel discussion. (I don’t know her, I just remember her because of her question).   She inquired about what the Ministry (Minerals and Energy) is actively doing to address the disparity between women's programs often discussed at such summits and the reality on the ground. Her question, though met with eye-rolls in a room dominated by men, resonated deeply with me. That question made think of my mother, who dedicated almost half of her life to working in a mine. Reflecting on her character, I realised that she embodies many traits typically associated with men. She communicates and thinks in a way that is often seen as abrasive and tough, yet she possesses the resilience and resourcefulness that define many strong women. My mother is an incredible woman, resolute confidence, a skilled negotiator, and a straight talker. Yet, these traits, while admirable, seem to have come at a cost. The softer, more traditionally feminine aspects of her personality were often overshadowed by the necessity to "fit in with the boys." This realisation made me understand that my mother, like many women in the mining industry, likely felt compelled to suppress aspects of her femininity to navigate her career successfully. It’s a humbling and sad truth that even today, women often have to adapt to male norms to progress professionally. The question Gorata asked at the summit underscores the ongoing struggle for women in mining. It serves as a strong reminder that despite good initiatives, practical change is still needed. Women in mining face a unique set of challenges. They often have to prove themselves in ways their male counterparts do not, all while managing the balancing act of professional and personal identities. My mother’s story is a testament to this struggle. However, the landscape is changing. Questions like Gorata’s represent a growing demand for tangible action and accountability. We must continue to ask these critical questions about women's roles and programs in mining until we see meaningful change. It's not enough to have initiatives on paper; they need to be practical and impactful in reality. As we push forward, I remain hopeful that the future holds a more equitable and supportive environment for women in mining. The State of Women in Mining: Your Thoughts for 2024? Is the narrative still the same? Are women still leaving the mining industry? We want to hear your insights! This was one of our favourite discussions at Femina Collective in 2023 when we stumbled upon a 2021 McKinsey & Company article that delved into the concerns surrounding women entering and leaving the mining industry. The article examined female representation across crucial dimensions: initial recruitment, medium-term retention, and the promotion of women throughout the organization. ➡ Attracting women to mining ➡ Retaining women in mining ➡ Promoting women in mining into more senior roles The call for action is clear—mining companies need to address all three dimensions to make significant progress. Values of equality and equity showcase the positive impact of diversity on financial and operating performance. Improving women's representation in the mining sector isn't a quick-fix situation. The women in mining recently concluded the local celebrations of Women in Mining, underscored by two powerful themes. At the international level, the theme was "I am Mining and I Belong," while the local celebration in Nigeria focused on "Trailblazers in Mining: Two Decades of Resilience, Innovation, and Achievement." The conference provided a platform to discuss critical issues such as creating awareness and mentoring the next generation of women in mining. Participants shared strategies to combat stereotypes and address harassment from other genders, aiming to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in the industry. We were honored to have the presence and support of: - @Barbara Darshinger - @Tope Adeyoju - WIM Angola - WIM Madagascar - WIM Ghana Additionally, the support from international organizations such as IWIM, AWIMA, West Africa Women in Mining, and more, was invaluable. Over the years women have battled for a place in the mining Industry. Currently, women form an essential part of the Industry labour force. Mostly in Artisanal & Small Scale mining, though still not there yet, but it’s a good start in the right direction. Through us Tanzania Women in Mining and Mineral Industry (TWiMMI) and specifically President Hon. Samia Suluhu, we are on a mission to show the world that “mining is for everyone” Despite the bias and prejudices. Women can take charge and make remarkable impacts in the Industry.
