As we celebrate the International Day of Women in Mining 2024, let's take a moment to consider the significance of this year's theme, 'I am mining and I belong.' We are excited to spotlight IWiM’s Advisory Council member Allison George, who shared: “When I think of ‘I am mining and I belong’, curiosity, intention, and representation are the three words that spring to mind. For me it is about all of this (we are mining and we belong)—I remain curious and intentional in this space. Mining is an exciting field that takes us on a journey through time—the story prior to extraction, the story of the material that has been extracted, or indeed the stories between human beings in relation to politics, socio-economics, trade, environment, collaboration, and conflict. It is closely interwoven with human history since the dawn of time. One way the mining industry could better support women in mining is to look for greater gender diversity on the boards of their joint ventures and partnerships. 26% of corporate directors in the S&P 500 are women...but only 6% of directors on mining JV Boards are women, based on Ankura Joint Venture and Partnership Practice research. #IDWIM #InternationalDayofWomeninMining #jointventures

The women in mining recently concluded the local celebrations of Women in Mining, underscored by two powerful themes. At the international level, the theme was "I am Mining and I Belong," while the local celebration in Nigeria focused on "Trailblazers in Mining: Two Decades of Resilience, Innovation, and Achievement." The conference provided a platform to discuss critical issues such as creating awareness and mentoring the next generation of women in mining. Participants shared strategies to combat stereotypes and address harassment from other genders, aiming to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in the industry. We were honored to have the presence and support of: - @Barbara Darshinger - @Tope Adeyoju - WIM Angola - WIM Madagascar - WIM Ghana Additionally, the support from international organizations such as IWIM, AWIMA, West Africa Women in Mining, and more, was invaluable. These discussions are vital as we work together to break down barriers and build a future where women are empowered, respected, and fully integrated into all aspects of mining.
