Today, I want to celebrate the end of an era as Graham Moor steps down as CEO of the Roofing Association of New Zealand. It’s hard to truly capture the depth of his contribution to our industry and the mark he’s left over so many years. Within my very first month in this role, Graham called just to let me know he was always there to lend an ear if I ever needed it – and I did. From advocacy challenges to life’s highs and lows, he has been one of my go-to’s for guidance, wisdom, and support. The role of an Association Executive can be challenging and, at times, lonely. But Graham has always answered the phone – without fail. He hasn’t just been a source of advice and strength; he’s become a mate who genuinely cares. Our association and the wider industry owe him a great deal, as he has consistently advocated for others whenever possible. Personally, I am so grateful for the friendship we’ve built. To step down after years of tireless service, knowing that you’ve made such a significant impact, is something that deserves true recognition. So I want to acknowledge you, Graham, on behalf of myself, SARNZ- Scaffolding, Access & Rigging NZ Inc. and the NZ Specialist Trade Contractors Federation, for your unwavering dedication, commitment to doing what’s right for the industry, and the bloody big heart you put into everything you do. “He aha te mea nui o te ao? I’ve heard you say this many times, and that’s exactly what you’ve embodied as a leader – putting people first, building meaningful connections, and showing true care for those around you. During yesterday’s WPA Conference, it became evident that the end user’s concerns as to the suitability and durability of ground contact softwoods are being given full and careful consideration. It should matter not if a wood fence post costs £20 or £200, for ground contact, no matter what, it should be fit for purpose and deliver a suitable service life. Sawmills and processors, incising and preservative pressure treating to Use Class 4 (UC4), aim to deliver a service life of a minimum of 15 years. Some processors offering a warranted 30 year service life, which fulfills the criteria of National Highways Fencing Specification. End users need confidence restoring by correct procedures being followed. It is hoped that the WPA Benchmark Scheme will become a trademark, which will assure end users of fence posts and ground contact wood products being ‘fit for purpose’.

Recognition is one of the most powerful motivators. From the time we’re children, we crave acknowledgment for the effort we put in—and that doesn’t change as we grow older. Steve Little’s comment here is a perfect example of what makes the roofing industry so unique. I’ve witnessed time and time again peers, collaborators, and even competitors taking a moment to recognize and celebrate the achievements of others in our field. It’s something truly special. Being proud of our own work is one thing. But when we take it to the next level—when we celebrate and acknowledge someone else’s efforts and achievements—it creates a ripple effect. It motivates, inspires, and strengthens the bonds within our community. Whether it’s through a simple comment, a shoutout, or even a handshake at an event, recognition has the power to elevate us all.
