As Prince William says, "individuals, communities and nations are innovating like never before." Each year, five of these brilliant solutions are highlighted, celebrated and nurtured by The Earthshot Prize but in fact, these stories are just the tip of the iceberg, with many, many more innovative projects happening across the globe that we may never even hear of. This gives me great hope. Hear more about the incredible progress made by some of the Earthshot finalists towards protecting and restoring our planet in The Earthshot Prize Report 2024: https://lnkd.in/dzdnD3VA

If this image isn't enough to get you to ramp up action on climate change, I'm not sure what is. 😱 Terrifying. 💪🏽 But also motivating at the same time - there is so much we can and must do. Highly recommend following Sophia Kianni and Climate Cardinals if you aren't already. #sustainability #climateaction #thetimeisnow

Whilst my role at Archireef is very much centered on giving a voice to the 🌊 ocean in the boardroom, I also do the same with my kids, not taking them to boardrooms, 😜 well not yet anyway but taking them to the ocean. This past month, I was proudly joined by my son and daughter whilst Freediving 🤿, during which we saw a pod of 🐬 dolphins (their first) and an eye watering sunset. A good dose of screen detox plus inspiration to perhaps consider the ocean as their future workplace, as the ocean advocates of tomorrow? And a good dose of inspiration and energy for me to continue to lobby for more spending and collaboration on marine ecosystem restoration. We are 3 years into the 10 year window of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The clock is ticking fast for us all to join forces to reverse the decline of the state of our oceans. #oneocean #freediving #marinerestoration #corals #archireef #diving #sustainablegrowth #

Reef restoration is commonly seen as a scientific discipline that is implemented to try and improve the health and resilience of coral. It includes activities such as research on heat tolerant zooxanthellae, hybridisation of warm and cold coral species, sexual reproduction techniques of coral larvae and a host of other innovative and dynamic disciplines to improve our understanding of how to support the health of coral reefs into the future. But restoration is implemented by people. And when you ask people about their experience participating in active reef restoration many of the motivations are emotional and the benefits of restoration increasingly social. This film was produced for #ReefFutures2024 with the aim to highlight the motivations of restoration practitioners. Showcasing some of the people of restoration their hopes, motivations and the reasons why they participate as inspiration to others to help make a difference for the future of coral reefs. 🪸 The world’s coral reefs are at breaking point. Without action, these essential ecosystems may be lost forever. But there is hope. Did you know that coral reefs could recover faster than we ever thought possible? Thanks to our Sheba Hope Grows™ Program and the Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System (MARRS), some reefs have seen coral cover increase from 2% to 70% in just a few short years. We were thrilled to be joined again by Paralympian and ocean enthusiast, Ellie Simmonds, who visited our Great Barrier Reef site, where she learned all about the key to the programs success, the Reef Star - a hexagonal steel structure that stabilizes coral rubble and encourages rapid coral growth. #30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ (Day 30: The final map) For the final topic of the 30-day map challenge, I created the "Finale" map, featuring Finale—a small locality in Sicily, Italy. It is located along the northern coastline of Sicily, near the Tyrrhenian Sea, and is known for its beautiful beaches, historic charm, and picturesque surroundings. The name "Finale" likely derives from its historical role as the final point or terminus of a route or boundary. In Italian, "finale" translates to "final" or "end," suggesting that the village may have been established at the end of a particular path or served as a boundary marker. This interpretation aligns with the village's development in the 18th century as a maritime commercial outlet for the Marquisate of Geraci, indicating its function as a terminal point for trade routes. #30DayMapChallenge2024 #TheFinalMap #GIS #Finale #Sicily #Italy #Map

With an estimated 75% of global reefs being exposed to coral bleaching as of 2024 (NOAA, 2024), it is imperative that organizations, governments, and conservation groups have a bleaching response plan. Reef Resilience Network offers great tools for bleaching response, coral reef management, and overall working knowledge of reefs 🪸 Source: NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (🔗 https://lnkd.in/ek4bQZCb.)
In honor of 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝘽𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 month this November, we encourage all managers and practitioners to check if your 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 is up to date. The Reef Resilience Network developed a worksheet to guide managers through developing a bleaching response plan. This tool can help managers consider a range of issues that support a response effort. ✍ Access the worksheet and more of our free resources: https://lnkd.in/gTDFmg8h #coralbleaching #lifeisbetterincolor #reefresilience #coralbleachingawarenessmonth Coral Reef Alliance

Something incredible -- a true story of hope -- happened this week: the Chilean government met with Kristine Tompkins, co-founder of Tompkins Conservation, and Fundación Rewilding Chile, to sign a protocol agreement to create a new national park on the southernmost time of the Earth called the Cape Froward National Park. This establishes the creation of a new protected area of over 300,000 acres, similar to the size of Grand Teton National Park in the United States. It is a rugged region and refuge for highly endangered species, a transitional ecosystem between land and sea, where diverse marine life, including Magellanic penguins, Peale’s dolphins, and Sei and humpback whales, feed off nutrients provided by the Antarctic, Pacific and Atlantic currents and coasts are lined with dense kelp forest. Subantarctic forest covers nearly half of the proposed donation area, which also features 24,710 acres of peatlands, an ecosystem considered critical to carbon storage and climate change mitigation. I am deeply honored to have been able to contribute my part to the funding of this new protected area. View this exquisite land in the video. https://lnkd.in/gbWhre48 And if you want to know how you can support similar global initiatives, check out my slightly nerdy but fun primer here https://lnkd.in/giT35ngt
