Tight budgets, scrappiness and the scientification of advertising have become justifications (or excuses?) for art directors to tame their craft and reduce their roles to merely finding the right stock art and illustrating the copy line. Visionary art direction — the kind that makes the visual the concept — doesn’t need to be expensive. From VW to Lego, and even Apple’s iPod silhouettes print ads, are reminders of why we (I am an art director) got into this business in the first place: to tell brand stories in disruptive and artful ways (quoting Lee Clow!).

🔥 A creative director determines the creative vision of a brand or project and manifests that vision through digital, print and film installations. The job is to maintain a cohesive look and feel of a project...be it an advertising campaign, fashion line, video game or magazine...by ensuring the visuals, messaging and/or interactive and motion designs are on point. A creative director also establishes budgets and timelines and manages client relationships. A creative director’s main role is to guide, to recognize, nurture and protect people’s good ideas. What skills do you need? Besides creativity (duh), you need humility, perspective, openness and resolve—and the wisdom to know which to employ and in what combination, and you need a good dose of doubt. Doubt can be crippling, but it can also be empowering because it causes you to question your assumptions and evolve your thinking. It helps temper ego, which can crush collaboration, the lifeblood of the creative process. You also need knowledge of art history, design history, pop culture and counterculture. You have to keep up on art, technology, politics and social issues. Everything can be relevant if you allow it to be.

Oman's most practiced people skills architect | Performance Excellence Master Coach | ICF Coach Educator/Mentor | Director-Hallmark Training Institute:Powering talent & driving growth through transformative L&D solutions
Here's my point: pretty proposals don't automatically translate into positive impact. In a world driven by optics and visual storytelling, providers are striving to craft proposals that are not only visually appealing but also seemingly flawless. Yet, in this pursuit of flawless presentation, authenticity and genuine expertise are somehow getting lost in the noise. The allure of aesthetics is taking precedence over substance. It's time for a paradigm shift. Instead of 'Request for Proposals', let's call it 'Request for Solutions'. And, instead of being swayed by aesthetics, let's measure success by the impact created, the value delivered, and the integrity maintained. #Authenticity #ImpactOverAesthetics #RequestforSolutions #ProposalTips #BusinessIntegrity #ValueDriven

Q&A with James Nelson, Creative Director for Rosie Lee Creative, pt3 How do you define Rosie Lee and its work? To the layperson I would say we do graphic and spatial design as it’s fairly easy to picture even if it's a massive undersell. If talking to someone who understands the field, I’d say we create brand experiences in whatever form is needed. What makes RLC different to other agencies? The spectrum of experience in both the people and projects is quite broad, which means we tackle problems with an open mind when envisioning the outcome of a project. We’re not locked to a particular discipline or medium being the answer to a problem. We also prioritise envisioning the experience for the intended audience. What are they interested in? What will engage them? Will they understand what we’re trying to communicate? Advice for people starting out in creative industries? Be open-minded. Don’t listen to people who are closed-minded.

As the famous author Willi Shakespeare said: “To in-house, or not to in-house design/development - that is the question” Yes, I’m biased to be saying this, but listen: As a decision maker, the last thing you should be doing is managing a creative team. Building your team, acquiring customers, perfecting your product - that’s where your focus should be. Not on deciding which font to use in your new deck. And let's not forget how expensive creatives are! If you want to free yourself from this side of the business and ensure it’s in competent hands: Our work is always “pixel perfect”, and it will definitely cost less than building an in-house team. Drop me a note if this sounds interesting!

Human-Centric Brand Designer ❌🤖 Creative/Design work done by a human, for humans 📣 Advocate of brand marketing 💻 Work closely with Founders/CEOs and marketing teams
🦄 Creative Myth #1: Your Work Speaks for Itself If you are a Creative, you may have fallen into the trap at some point of your career believing that your work speaks for itself. That may be true 20 to 30 years ago when marketing/advertising looked a lot different then. Today that looks dramatically different as clients and brands hire creative services to yield business results. Not that they did not in the past, but paying for creative services to support marketing that aligns with business objectives is even more important in an economic downturn. Your portfolio cannot be your differentiator. You have to deliver the entire experience. ❓ Question: What are you doing to differentiate yourself from others outside of your portfolio? #creativeservices #graphicdesigner #artdirector #creativedirector
