Children of parents deployed in the military face unique challenges that can significantly impact their well-being and development. From coping with parental absence to adjusting to frequent relocations, these children need dedicated assistance to thrive amidst the challenges of military life. Some struggles include: • Emotional stress and anxiety stemming from parental separation • Difficulty adjusting to frequent relocations and changes in schools and communities • Behavioral issues and academic struggles due to the disruption in routine and support systems Support and resources available/worth seeking: • Military Family Life Counselors offering counseling services to help children cope with emotional challenges • Military Family Support Centers providing programs and activities to strengthen family bonds and foster community connections such as @militaryfamilyorg (a percentage of all Couples’ Coffee Co sales are donated to this organization)  • Schools offering support systems such as counselors and support groups to assist military-connected children in adjusting to new environments We know this can be a difficult time to navigate, but know we’re here for you. Our new paper explores four themes gathered from children from military families, and their parents and educators. These are family transitions (parents moving in and out of the household due to deployment and training), mobility (due to frequent relocations), and risk and protective factors. We also explore how we used their narratives and other lived and living experience narratives to co-create free online research-based resources. Recent findings from the Military Family Advisory Network's 2023 biennial study reveal that 1 in 5 military families are facing food insecurity, an increase from 1 in 8 just two years ago. Frequent relocations, a common part of military life, often lead to military spouse underemployment and out-of-pocket moving expenses like housing deposits and utility setup fees. These financial strains make it harder for many families to make ends meet, especially households with children, who are more likely to experience food insecurity. Hayley Ann Boswell ⭐️This hit me. Our eldest is onto her 7th school and all four of our children have faced challenges with their education due to being Defence Kidz. Thankfully, they have also thrived. As Defence families, we do not get to pick where we live. The amount of times some snarky person on the phone has said to me, "Why didn't you have them on the wait list from birth?" We, as Defence families, don't get that luxury. How about priority of placement for Defence Kidz in ALL childcare centres. Who needs respite more than a Defence spouse doing it solo? How about State School of CHOICE? We don't get to pick where we live, so how about allowing us to pick the State school that best suits our child regardless of catchment area? Small actionable outcomes that would give Defence families a little bit of power to determine the best educational outcomes for their children. These options are already available to at risk children, so the framework is there. How about our Defence Kidz?

For the first time in my spouse's career, we have to pay more than BAH to live in a modest, inexpensive-for-the-area rental home that's reasonable commuting distance to his workplace. Against the odds, we happen to be a two-income household. Many military families can't do this— and shouldn't have to. Please take this survey (and every other military family experience survey you come across by reputable organizations like BSF). This is how we produce the data needed to draw attention and enact change.

Adoption is wildly expensive these days, and for many military families looking to build their families, it's the only option due to extremely limited policy support. This is about more than just us—it’s about everyone who has fought for our #exceptional military families before us, and those standing with us now. We are honored to continue this important work. Supporting our most vulnerable families isn’t something we can do alone. We need to come together to improve policies and processes at every level—local community, state and federal. We must also be innovative and consider ways to make life easier for these families, like how to transfer IEPs and Medicaid waivers across state lines, to ensure that these families have the support they need. Partners in PROMISE, Executive Director Michelle Norman stated, “These are quality of life issues that impact readiness and retention. We need to do everything we can to support these military families.” Improving the EFMP program will improve military readiness and retention. It’s going to take all of us working together to make it happen.
