At MGAC, we are eternally honored to be entrusted with the task of turning our clients’ dreams into reality. This sentiment rings true with every project we work on—no matter the size or scope. Still, some calls for help stop us in our tracks and truly humble us. The request to manage the fabrication and installation of #TheEmbrace, Boston Common’s first addition in more than three decades, was one of those calls. Today, we go #BehindTheBuild on this monumental public art project. Hank Thomas Thomas MASS Design Group WES Construction Corp. Embrace Boston

Richard Buckminster Fuller, often called "Bucky," was a groundbreaking inventor, architect, and visionary thinker of the 20th century. Born on July 12, 1895, in Milton, Massachusetts, Fuller’s innovative ideas and designs have made a lasting impact on architecture, design, and sustainability. Fuller attended Harvard University but was expelled twice. His unconventional thinking set the stage for his future as a pioneering innovator. One of his most famous inventions is the geodesic dome, a structure made of a network of triangles that is incredibly strong and lightweight. This design perfectly embodies Fuller's belief in "doing more with less." He also designed the Dymaxion House, an energy-efficient, mass-producible home, and the Dymaxion Car, a fuel-efficient, aerodynamic vehicle. Though these designs never reached mass production, they showcased Fuller's forward-thinking approach to design and sustainability. Fuller’s vision extended to global systems with the World Game, an educational simulation aimed at solving global problems like resource distribution and sustainability. This game highlighted Fuller's belief in the potential for humanity to thrive through intelligent design and cooperation. Known for his thought-provoking quotes, Fuller once said, "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." His philosophy emphasized human ingenuity's potential to create a better world. Fuller’s work continues to inspire architects, designers, and thinkers worldwide. Celebrating his legacy encourages future generations to think outside the box and strive for a better world. #RichardBuckminsterFuller #Innovation #Sustainability #GeodesicDome #Innovation #DymaxionHouse #DymaxionCar #WorldGame #GlobalVision #Quotes #Philosophy

S y m p o s i u m On November 2023, Klaas De Rycke from B+G Paris was invited to the 5. Symposium Ingenieurbaukunst, held in Munich, Germany. Klaas had the opportunity to introduce the article 'LEICHTBAU ODER ÖKOLOGISCH LEICHTER BAUEN - Was kann das heute bedeuten?' he wrote in collaboration with Pr.Lucio Blandini, Annette Bögle, and Jan Knippers for Ingenieurbaukunst - Design for Construction. The article explores the timeless principles of lightweight construction as a design philosophy, emphasising efficient load-bearing with minimal material weight. Originating from influential figures like Fritz Leonhardt and Frei Otto, the approach extends beyond material efficiency to holistic sustainability, urging a shift from efficiency to effectiveness. It underscores the importance of responsible engineering, showcasing examples where designers take full responsibility for the construction process. Lightweight construction goes beyond structural considerations, incorporating broader environmental and societal impacts. Architectural Design (c) @benjaminkanarek The Wells Arts and Sciences Center is composed of autonomous geodesic domes interwoven from a fusion of titanium, steel, copper, and brass. This amalgamation embodies the pinnacle of the arts and sciences, symbolically representing their convergence and synergy within a singular architectural expression. Each dome, self-sufficient yet interconnected, signifies the apex of creativity and knowledge melded together, shaping a remarkable edifice that encapsulates the essence of both disciplines.

At Fast + Epp, our core purpose is to advance structural design and propel architectural imagination. Two years ago, we launched Concept Lab to continue our legacy of innovation and provide a physical space for our staff and colleagues to brainstorm, develop, test, and prototype their ideas. A key focus of Concept Lab is to develop new products to help solve the most persistent challenges encountered during design and construction. We are excited to announce that next week at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, we will be unveiling a new product which we believe will be a game changer for mass timber construction. Stop by booth #925 and Brandon Sullivan, Concept Lab Manager, will be happy to chat about what we’ve been working on. #structuralengineering #masstimber #masstimberdesign #researchanddevelopment #testing

Recently, I had the pleasure of taking my son to the Texas Science and Natural History Museum on the UT Austin campus. Despite its small size, the museum, with its Art Deco influence, exudes a stoic presence both inside and out. As an architect, I perceive buildings differently than most. I focus on the details, the lighting, and the emotions a building evokes. Understanding the how and why of a structure excites me—it's a passion that, as design professionals, we need to feel deeply, even if it sometimes drives my wife a little crazy. Then, I see my two-year-old son, bursting with raw excitement as he charges into the great hall. He lets out a roar as he nears the 33-foot T-Rex on display. In that moment, everything else fades away, and I'm completely absorbed in his joy. After we returned home, I reflected on how that building brought me so much joy. The combination of the architecture and the exhibits created a memorable experience. Isn't that what we're all seeking? The experience, the emotion, the joy... In my work as an architect here at DLR Group, we strive to bring joy to everyone who interacts with the environments we create. This joy can stem from the building itself or from what occurs within its walls. It's about crafting spaces that foster enjoyment and growth for those inside. While we don't always get the chance to work on grand civic projects, we make it a mission to infuse every project with that same sense of joy. #DLRGroup #Design

🌳How to Co-create with Nature?🐛 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining an on-stage dialogue with partners in crime Tiia Vihand Estonian Design Centre and Vincent van Herk Dutch Design Week, moderated by Päivi Tahkokallio, on this important, interesting, and inspiring question: How to co-create with nature? Spending an entire Summit during munich creative business week on this topic is, from my point of view, encouraging. This would not have been the case 3-5 years ago. I enjoyed that throughout this Summit, the intention was not to conclude anything but simply to share perspectives and debate the HOW, because there’s no one answer to this question. 🙏🏼 But what is key to me is that we grow confidence in debating the how, and explore and experiment in a way that, 10 years from now (hopefully only 5 years!), co-creating with nature is mainstream. Some key takeaways: 🍀 How to give Nature a voice? Nature has a voice. Nature will fix itself. We, humans, need to find ways to listen. 🍀 Nature is one of the most important stakeholders, whether you want to recognize it or not. 🍀 Co-creation with nature has a crucial impact on climate change mitigation. But co-creating with nature also offers substantial potential in relation to health, wellbeing, community building, and a sense of belonging. 🍀 Co-creation processes create empathy – in this case, for both humans and non-humans. 🍀 We, the current generations, need to accept that we are planting seeds today that will be harvested by future generations. 🍀 Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration!!! I am happy that I could represent both DDC – Danish Design Center, BEDA - The Bureau of European Design Associations, and Desire an Irresistible Circular Society. Thanks Nadine Vicentini Thorsten Buch Leonhard Nima Daniela Bohlinger Kara Pecknold 💚
The mcbw design summit 2024 was a complete success: an entire day was dedicated to examining the theme of the year in more detail from different angles: How to co-create with nature ... as a designer, an entrepreneur, a creatively active person. We heard the interesting positions of the mcbw advisory board, the international perspectives of BEDA members and then delved deeper into the individual sub-themes with selected examples from high-calibre speakers. The highlight was certainly mcbw's Creative Explorer: Stefano Boeri and his presentation on Green Obsession. There was no shortage of networking either - it was an all-round successful day full of inspiration. Many thanks to all participants, speakers, organisers and the Munich Urban Colab team. 🙏 Stefano Boeri Stefano Boeri Architetti Daniela Bohlinger BMW Group Officina Corpuscoli MOGU mycelium Laura Kiesewetter Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) Tom Kortbeek Fillip Studios Leonhard Nima Studio Nima BEDA - The Bureau of European Design Associations Päivi Tahkokallio Tiia Vihand Christina Melander Vincent van Herk BayernDesign #designconnects #mcbw24 #designweek #designsummit #inspiration #howtococreatewithnature #TheGermanDesignEvent #designtalk #paneldiscussion #design Reel: Martin Bresler

This was my Thursday evening with Denise Huang, working on our studio models. Exploring the intricacies of architecture has been a captivating journey for me. The process of model making, with its meticulous attention to measurements, material properties, clean edges, material flexibility, and envisioning unseen structures in my mind, allows me to tap into a unique cognitive realm. It's fascinating how this discipline challenges me to think beyond the visible, making something out of nothing. How does your experience with model-making contribute to your career in architecture?
