A £250k boost for nature recovery 🌱 Projects for Nature is an online platform developed through a public/private partnership involving the Council for Sustainable Business, Accenture, Crowdfunder UK, Wildlife and Countryside Link, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Environment Agency and Natural England. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is a founding business partner of Projects for Nature and the first utility company to support the pioneering initiative, which accelerates nature recovery by connecting businesses with screened nature restoration projects. Supporting two projects, SSEN’s commitment of £250k will enable Heal Rewilding in Somerset to install deer fencing which will protect returning saplings, scrub plants and native flora. 🌿 The funding will also help the Freshwater Habitats Trust to support wetland species and climate resilience by rewetting vulnerable alkaline fen in Oxfordshire. 💧 In a new blog, Chairperson for Projects for Nature, Justin Francis, explains the important impact this funding will have on nature recovery, supporting England’s growing Nature Recovery Network. Read his blog here: https://lnkd.in/en2P_gVZ. If you’re a business that wants to get involved, search ‘Projects for Nature’. #NatureRecoveryNetwork #CorporateResponsibility #Biodiversity #Environment

🌳 Leading from the Front: The Role of the Public Sector in Nature Recovery Today, I had the privilege of attending the Woodland Trust’s launch of their new research report, Leading from the Front - The Role of the Public Sector in Nature Recovery. It was lovely to be invited to gather in Westminster and really question the state of play for nature markets. Sophus zu Ermgassen's point struck a chord: we are overly reliant on poorly regulated nature markets. Private finance must complement public funding—not replace it—if nature is to truly thrive in the way we all want. A key reminder from the event was that while Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is estimated to generate £135-274 million per year, it still operates in the context of overall nature loss. Steering these markets to deliver genuine habitat restoration, align with nature's needs, and be held accountable, is crucial for long-term success. The event underscored the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors to ensure these markets deliver real results on the ground. A huge thank you to the Woodland Trust for hosting this timely and thought-provoking discussion. 🌍💚 Another challenge, another day in protecting and restoring nature. The Woodland Trust Helen Avery

We're excited to announce that our 700+ hectare Cairngorms Peatland Restoration Project is now ready for investment and Peatland Carbon Credit purchase. It is shocking that 3.5% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas footprint comes from degraded peatland, and our work is directly addressing this. The project is located in the heart of the majestic Cairngorms National Park in the central Highlands of Scotland. As well as providing a vital climate solution, the project is enhancing natural habitats, conserving wildlife species, naturally reducing pollutants and rebalancing nutrient levels. The project is creating jobs for the local community, seeking to demonstrate how private financing can shoulder a greater share of the costs of peatland restoration with less reliance on public funding, and giving 10% of any project profits to a local community trust. The Scottish Government’s spending decisions underpin the fate of our land and seas. Last night, we launched our pathway to a #RewildingNation, outlining a clear route to upscaling rewilding across Scotland’s land and seas. Scotland has the people, places and potential to be a trailblazer in reversing collapses in biodiversity, tackling climate breakdown, and creating a cascade of benefits for people and communities. But we need our government to help create a wilder future for Scotland, by: ⬆️Expanding funding for nature restoration 🌱Creating sustainable funding routes for large-scale nature restoration on land and at sea ✅ Supporting farmers, crofters and other land managers to restore nature at scale too 🌳Resourcing local authorities to deliver on ‘nature networks’ Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/euQf49kr

How I wish the powers that be within the work of Ecological Restoration, Reforestation, Greening Initiatives and all the work being done by locally owned organisations and local communities on the ground, could understand that any disturbance in funding and support mechanisms directly impacts the livelihoods of the people on the ground. There is often a disconnect between the realities on the ground and the offices where resources come from. Local municipalities and national governments' support is always filled with red tape and long processes. This system is not built for this kind of work, which is often misunderstood. We don't even know where we fit in for funding. Local funds are not supporting these projects due to financial constraints and complex processes. If you're reading this, think about the locally owned organisations and enterprises that depend on these resources. With steady long-term support, we can have very successful projects. The work we do is crucial, and with the right support, we can achieve great things for our communities and environment. #EcologicalRestoration #Reforestation #GreeningInitiatives #LocalCommunities #SustainableFunding #EnvironmentalSupport #CommunityProjects #GreenEconomy #LocalOrganisations #EcologicalImpact #EnvironmentalJustice #SupportLocal #SustainableFuture

We are pleased to share the upcoming Nature Positive Water workshop, proudly led by the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA). This event is a collaborative effort, with special thanks to our partners at Yarra Valley Water, Melbourne Water, Barwon Water, and Icon Water. As part of the broader conference program convened by the Australian Land Conservation Alliance, this workshop is essential for anyone interested in understanding how the water sector is contributing to nature-positive goals in Australia. We will also explore emerging opportunities to partner with private landholders and community groups to scale these efforts. The workshop will cover three key themes: 💦 Partnering with water utilities – First Nations perspectives and opportunities 💦 Where we are now – water utility case studies with panel and group discussion 💦 Where we can go – exploring partnerships to scale action inspired by global case studies This event brings together over 400 delegates for two days of expert keynotes, practical workshops, and interactive panels. Join us for this enriching experience, and let’s work together to deepen our understanding of nature-related risks and opportunities. Secure your place today and become a part of this transformative journey. You can download the conference program here: https://lnkd.in/gfyMunce and register to join the conference here: https://lnkd.in/gPTbemUP Or if you wish to join the Nature Positive Workshop as a standalone workshop event, please register here: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/gYRHMc88 Adam Lovell Stuart Wilson Nina Braid Chris Brace Tim Chaseling Meg Humphrys Jason Mingo Greg Robinson Erik Spiro Nicole S. What Can England Learn from Scotland’s Community Land Buyouts? Scotland's pioneering community land buyouts are empowering local residents to reclaim, restore, and protect vital natural landscapes. Featured in the FT, Langholm’s transformation into the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve, led by the town’s own community, shows how local people can actively participate in conservation, replacing harmful land practices with ecological stewardship. With 700 community-owned assets covering over half a million acres in Scotland, these initiatives reflect a significant shift toward sustainability and biodiversity. In England, private landownership remains concentrated among a small elite, often posing challenges to the country's ecological health. Scotland’s approach demonstrates that community-led ownership, which involves collaborative decision-making and sustainable practices, can effectively restore and preserve land. As England looks to address its own land and nature crises, a community-centered model like Scotland's could lead to more resilient, biodiverse ecosystems. What can the England learn from this? Embracing community land buyouts in England could shift the landscape toward a more inclusive, sustainable future. It's time to give local communities a say in stewarding the land we all depend on.
