Around this time last year I did a post about what you could do in 2023 without any budget for biodiversity. How you get biodiversity up the agenda in 2024 now you've (hopefully) got some time and budget in your hands: 1. CSRD. And in particular ESRS E4 (Biodiversity and Ecosystems). Most people at the moment are still at the start, working out their double materiality and high level corporate approaches. Take a look at ESRS E4 and see how well prepared you are for it - for the vast majority, the answer is not at all. Make sure senior leaders are aware. 2. Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) . Investors are looking for more information on nature and biodiversity from corporates and TNFD is the vehicle to do this. The framework is flexible and relatively approachable and while also satisfying investors, will help you work towards CSRD disclosures. 3. Science Based Targets Network. In my opinion, the secret glue holding the above together. The only people bringing robust, tested and validated methods. Even if going all the way on SBTN isn't the right option for your company, Steps 1 and 2 provide defensible materiality screening for the value chain that plug into points 1 and 2 above. The three areas above are stimulating change within businesses - unlocking resource for doing more and bringing nature into corporate conversations. However, they do not necessarily lead to the action that we need to see. Setting the above into a robust strategy that links closely to your business, what it's trying to achieve, what it can do differently is absolutely imperative. Undertaking disclosures or setting targets on biodiversity will soon become the status quo and leaders will be crowned based on what they're doing and the results and impact they are having. A-Track is a new four-year, €11 million project that will accelerate action for nature by business, financial institutions and government.   A-Track is working with leading thought leaders and practitioners who have been driving change in the measurement and valuation of natural capital and biodiversity. Existing tools and approaches are being brought together and developed further to enable businesses, financial intuitions, and governments to accelerate action for nature. As a partner in A-Track, we are looking forward to working with the consortium to accelerate the use of natural capital approaches in decision making across Europe. Our role in the consortium includes developing biodiversity information pathways. Our aim is to demonstrate how the combination of private and public sector information can be used to support decision making and the use of various applications at corporate and government levels.   We are looking forward to collaborating with the Capitals Coalition, VITO, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, Oppla, UNEP-WCMC, University of Stuttgart, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), ICAEW and the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Last Friday, 15 December, I had the pleasure to be part of a new milestone in BNP Paribas’s sustainability journey: we launched a multiyear partnership with Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. Together with Naturalis, we share a mission to accelerate the protection and restoration of biodiversity. That shared mission is at the heart of this partnership. It’s a long-term collaboration that’s not about talk: it’s about leveraging one another’s strengths to drive real impact.
