Abatable announced last week that we are thrilled to be partnering with the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 to support the Games to invest in a lasting climate legacy and a positive future for climate, nature and people. 🥇 Alongside direct sustainability interventions to reduce emissions 50% compared to previous Olympic Games, Paris 2024 is also investing in carbon credits as part of its climate contribution programme to support additional climate action. Through our partnership with Paris 2024 we sourced and vetted six high-quality climate action projects to enable the Games to expand its global impact through this programme. This saw us leverage our end-to-end carbon market solutions to review and assess hundreds of carbon credit project proposals to identify those that met Paris 2024’s stringent quality criteria. We then structured and delivered an innovative carbon offtake strategy to provide certainty for the Games and financial support for the project development partners. Through Abatable, Paris 2024 is supporting climate action across Guatemala, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Paris 2024 has purchased 1.3 million carbon credits from projects that collectively protect more than 400,000 hectares of threatened forest, conserve habitats for 45 threatened species, provide access to clean energy in 200,000 households, and distribute more than 600,000 clean cooking stoves. Abatable is proud to have helped Paris 2024 invest in these crucial initiatives and leave a lasting legacy for climate, nature and people. The Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency have united around three clear asks for climate negotiators for the next climate conference in Baku. Learn more and download the joint position, along with supporting documents, here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQCgAAgx As implementation partners to the #ParisAgreement, local and other subnational governments - in collaboration with the LGMA Constituency - are committed to supporting the development, financing, and execution of ambitious NDCs and other key strategies leading up to 2025. For COP29 Azerbaijan, the #LGMA has three main asks: 1️⃣ Accelerate inclusive, multilevel, gender-responsive and cooperative action, through new Nationally Determined Contributions developed in partnership with local and other subnational governments. 2️⃣ Finance sustainable urbanization and climate action at all levels. 3️⃣ Align the climate, nature, pollution and sustainable development agendas. COP28 UAE underscored the critical role of #MultilevelAction and local governments in driving global climate goals, celebrating breakthroughs like the #CHAMP initiative and the first-ever Local Climate Action Summit. Yet, despite this significant progress, local and other subnational governments are still sounding the alarm over the world’s path toward the SDGs and the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target. We invite all key stakeholders and local and other subnational governments to endorse the position by 31 October. The complete list of endorsers will be announced on 11 November at the LGMA #COP29 Press Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. 📌 How can we use public finance smartly? 📌 How can we increase the role of international finance institutions? 📌 How can we improve the performance of multilateral climate funds? 🇫🇷 On Monday 4 December, the IEU responded to these questions as part of ‘Financing the transition,’ an event co-hosted by the IEU and I4CE LinkedIn Page with speakers from the French Development Agency (AFD), Ministry of Finance of Chile, Global Environment Facility, Climate Investment Funds and Adaptation Fund at the #France Pavillion at COP28 UAE. 💸 The IEU was represented by Andreas Reumann Head of the IEU, who spoke on a panel evaluating the performance of multilateral funds, alongside Neeraj Negi from the GEF, Neha Sharma from CIF and Debbie Menezes from the Adaptation Fund. Andreas spoke on the contribution of the GCF to financing the transition, noting too where IEU evaluations have signposted how the fund can better support countries to accelerate the transition towards a low carbon and climate resilient development. This includes a more strategic and intentional use of the Readiness and Preparatory Support programme. Many thanks to our speakers and audience for the insightful and interesting discussions at #COP28! 👏 📺 To learn more about what was said and the questions asked by audience members, watch the session here: https://lnkd.in/gA8qZfNb #COP28 #UniteActDeliver #ClimateAction #Finance4Climate #GCFatCOP #COP28UAE

Head of Global Section CITIES at GIZ / DEUTSCHE GESELLSCHAFT FUR INTERNATIONALE ZUSAMMENARBEIT (GIZ) GmbH
🌇🌍 Cities play a central role when it comes to achieving the climate goals! 🚨 To put urgent urban issues on the agenda of decision-makers at the upcoming #COP29, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH's Sector Project City has supported ICLEI in organizing the Daring Cities 2024 Bonn Dialogues! ICLEI was particularly successful this year in creating synergies between Daring Cities and UN Climate Change’s Subsidiary Bodies by bringing together the urban community with national climate negotiators, the COP presidencies as well as IPCC experts. The fifth edition of Daring Cities focused among others on the "Coalition for High Ambition Multi-level Partnership" - #CHAMP for short - which was launched during #COP28. This coalition of 72 countries, to which Germany also belongs, aims to improve cooperation between national and #subnational governments in the implementation of their climate strategies. The public dialogue event was attended by high-ranking guests. Bonn Mayor Katja Dörner, co-host of Daring Cities, spoke on an all-female panel with representatives of the COP28 presidency of United Arab Emirates, Jamila El Mir, and COP29 High Level Champion of Azerbaijan, Nigar Arpadarai. They stressed the importance of cities in achieving the climate goals. They all agreed on one point: all levels, from local to national, must be aligned in order to effectively implement the necessary climate actions. Participants from GIZ included Kristian Lempa, Director of the Division “Global Policy, Governance, Cities”, and Dr. Elke Siehl, Director of the Department Sector and Global Programmes (GloBe). During the well-attended plenary discussions, Kristian Lempa emphasized that CHAMP must function beyond institutional boundaries. According to him the initiative is a potential game changer but to be meaningful it needs to facilitate access to finance on the sub-national level. "The magic happens at the bottom level," he said, referring to the important work that takes place on-site. At the high-level rountable that took place just before, Elke Siehl expressed GIZ’s commitment as a dedicated partner with many years of experience in supporting multilevel governance approaches. I could not agree more with my colleagues! It is crucial to strengthen the subnational level in national climate strategies – especially in the urban context! #SB60 #MultilevelClimateAction #Bonn (Photo © Lennard Kehl)

Is Africa Ready for #carbonmarkets? In our latest engagement at Conference of Parties on Climate Change #cop28uae, we noticed the debate highly concentrated by the various actors who came to play this imaginably huge market opportunity for the world. Initiatives are already underway to certify successful carbon projects and curb greenwashing claims by companies. The standard of quality projects and clarity on financial flows is one that made this topic particularly exhausting. Parties had to wrap up and postpone the talks for future COP's mainly due to a clash between the European Union and the United States over regulations, with the EU and The Coalition for Rain Forest Nations wanting stricter guidelines on the carbon market, and the US wanting more relaxed rules. Our Environmental Consultant have captured the mood in the final hours of the COP28 during his corridor diplomacy at Dubai's Expo City.
