The Army recently expanded its Military Spouse Licensing Fellowship programs, taking a significant step towards addressing the credentialing hurdles military spouses face when moving between states. This initiative provides funding and support for obtaining new licenses, easing one of the major employment challenges for military spouses. Military spouses have long been battling to build stable and rewarding careers, this development starts to give the support needed to make that happen. At Squared Away, we are committed to this mission. We invite you to join us in supporting military spouses. Whether you’re a business leader, community member, or someone eager to make a difference, there are numerous ways to get involved. By advocating for supportive policies and offering flexible job opportunities, organizations can help bridge the employment gap and empower military spouses to thrive in their careers. Together, we can make a significant impact and ensure military spouses can build rewarding careers, no matter where they are stationed. Before I left active duty, I had a leader tell me that my generation of officers were part of the "special snowflake" generation of the military- we want to be treated as individuals and not just a plug and play asset of the Army. He phrased this as a negative. I see this as 100% correct, but as a positive! We each have a specific set of skills and abilities. The Army doesn't recognize this for the most part outside of the MOS qualifications they give you. For officers, the Army doesn't even care what degree you have for basic branches. Political Science degree? This indicates someone who would be an excellent logistics officer because they were good at a month long camp. In light of the growing retention issues, recruiting and talent management policies and culture need to change. We are not currently in a WWII/ Korea situation where we are losing Battalions of troops per day. Units have standard needs based on the MOS qualifications mentioned above. However, some individuals are better qualified to hold those positions than others. This could be based on degrees, certifications, language skills, previous evaluations, etc. These individual capabilities increase and become more specialized as they progress in their career. The military should capitalize on this instead of pushing it to the side. I particularly appreciate the highlight of the long term effect of this- it decreases the likelihood of multigenerational military service. This is one of our primary sources of recruits. If I saw my parents struggling to pay the bills, continually changing jobs/careers, and stressing about whether they will get to live together, then I would probably question if the military life was for me. This doesn't even include the stressors of potential deployments and training events.
This is a must-read for military leaders and policy makers, and for all military family advocates. (*Link in comments*) Wendy Whitman Cobb and Joshua Cobb have outlined exactly why this matters so much and how the DOD can help. In addition to their recommendations, I have also been advocating for the creation of a remote-friendly career development track for qualified spouses within the federal government (similar to the existing GS 7-9-11 fellowship programs).

Coffee reflections this morning… 💡Collaboration is key for strong pathways to exist in military affiliated employment initiatives. No man is an island, and no one company or organization can make it all happen for everyone. People are different and each individual needs to identify their own path. 💡 Educating TSMs on civilian workforce processes and terminology is vital for successful transitions, which can only exist through strong collaborations. (Thank you for your post today, Joel Martycz, which brought this to light). 💡 You don’t know what you don’t know. Ask questions of trusted orofessionals, heed advice from individuals who have successfully done what you are looking to do, and stay humble throughout the process. 💡 This new hat from Dobbs Equipment, LLC is the bee’s knees. #coffeethoughts #transitioningservicemembers #militaryspouses #veteransemployment #militarydependents #feedandsheltertheworld #strongpathways
