Reflecting on the AWARD-H2020 Project Sam Wood, our segment leader for industrial automation, attended the final consortium meeting in Brussels last week to discuss lessons learned and review what the project had delivered. As a result of the AWARD-H2020 project, we are proud to have developed the RAS3 sensor, a compact, cost-effective, high-resolution radar designed for autonomous industrial vehicle applications. Through AWARD-H2020, we learned that adverse weather, like snow and rain, poses significant challenges for autonomous outdoor logistics. Our high-resolution radar technology proved critical in ensuring all-weather driving capability: taking proposals from pilots, to real-world, commercially viable applications. As we finalise production plans and work with early adopters, we look forward to growing the relationships we've formed through the project and realising the benefits of autonomous outdoor logistics. The term CASE was coined to describe four pivotal areas of technology that have since shaped automotive product development: connected, automated, shared, and electrified. Recently, a roundtable organised by international automotive network ASSOCIATION GERPISA featured FISITA’s Rémi Bastien in a debate on the merits of CASE alongside industry experts Patrick PELATA and Takahiro Fujimoto. Chaired by Tommaso Pardi, Director of GERPISA, the panel delved into various topics under the theme, “Convergence and divergence of trajectories of changes. The end of the CASE paradigm in the automotive industry?” Panellists: - Remi Bastien: Special Advisor to the FISITA CEO and former VP automotive prospective of Renault Group - Patrick Pelata: President of Académie des technologies, President of Meta Consulting LLC, former Chief Operating Officer of Renault - Takahiro Fujimoto: Professor at Waseda University, Professor Emeritus at The University of Tokyo, and Senior Research Associate at Harvard Business School Discussion highlights: - CASE – a paradigm shift, or mere hype? Despite significant investment, CASE is far to fully realise the vision of a world dominated by connected, autonomous, shared, and electric vehicles as initially projected a decade ago. The panel debated whether CASE represents a true paradigm shift or if it has been overhyped. - What happens next? Given the varied maturity levels of CASE components, the discussion explored current focal points in automotive technology development and what the future might hold. The panellists do not believe in a future with 100% sales with CASE products. Remi BASTIEN (FISITA) stated that, regarding the impact for the society and environment, the S for share is the most important... but the most difficult dimension to achieve. - Regional development trends The panel examined whether the divergent development patterns in different countries and regions will persist, or if new automotive technologies will eventually converge into global standards, creating a truly global market. This insightful debate sheds light on the evolving landscape of automotive technology and the future direction of CASE initiatives. Our colleague Johannes Boithling had an enriching experience at the recent #CES2024 in Las Vegas. Engaging discussions and valuable exchanges with industry experts and business partners led to some important observations. 🚌 SAE Level 4 ADS Providers Despite the challenging environment, #SAE Level 4 #ADS providers including Mobileye, WeRide.ai, TIER IV, Zoox, Helm.ai, Aurora, Continental, Torc Robotics and Gatik showcased their advancements at #CES. The competition among these vendors depends on several factors, including catching up to the performers such as Waymo, time-to-market pressure, conquering cities, development costs, and safe deployment. The ultimate success will depend on the future market structure, market share and profitability. Particularly in the US urban #MaaS use case, companies need to carefully assess their competitiveness against the top performers. Alternatively, specialisation is an option for those unable to keep up with the leaders in #MaaS use cases. For instance, Torc Robotics and the Aurora-Continental collaboration, are exploring the long-haul trucking, which could prove to be a lucrative alternative. Even in this area, there is untapped potential as long as companies focus on hub-to-hub operations rather than covering the entire product journey. In summary, the race for #SAE Level 4 services are likely to be a two-winners-take-all scenario, driven by network effects and scaling challenges. Besides safety, timely deployment will be critical, and it will be fascinating to see which #ADS vendors successfully get their use cases on the road by 2024. 🎯 SAE Level 4 Tools for Development & Deployment Navigating the complexities of testing autonomous driving systems remains a key challenge in their development. Recognising the need for a multi-pillar approach to verify and validate these systems and mitigate risk, #CES2024 showcased promising approaches. From multi-parameter end-to-end test tools to innovative simulations and risk assessments for service areas and Operational Design Domain (ODD), companies such as SIMULYTIC - a Siemens AG Venture, dSPACE, Foretellix, Cognata, MORAI Inc. and others are leading the way. Excited for what lies ahead in 2024 and at the next #CES! #P3 #autonomousdriving #selfdrivingvehicles #futuremobility #automotiveindustry #innovation #technology #ai #autonomousmobility
