Director at Wordscape, Baltic Triangle CIC + Kitty's Launderette; editor-in-chief at Ethos mag; Left Bank mag editorial board
Wow, it’s pretty much three years ago (August 2021) that I did my carbon literacy training. Back then there were just over 20,000 of us, and in the time since they’ve swelled that number to a huge 100,000 people around the world. I did a day’s worth of climate action training led by Energy Projects Plus and accredited by the UN-recognised The Carbon Literacy Project, to support cutting carbon emissions and contributing to the low-carbon transition. Following the training, I pledged to make a few changes; in preparation we’d changed our home energy supplier to a green supplier, and had just installed some more insulation. Then, I decided to (buy and) build a bike shed, so that I could get a bike to use for my journeys around Liverpool. It actually took me almost a year to do that, but in September 2022 I bought a bike, and I’ve cut down on car journeys dramatically – probably by something like 90%. AND, I realised when writing this, it’s when I gave up eating beef, and started to increase my number of meat-free days each week. At work, we embarked on a project with the Low Carbon Eco-Innovatory Unit at John Moores University to carry out a carbon audit for Ethos magazine, and look at where we could adjust our production and distribution models to reduce our energy consumption and emissions. That included carbon neutral paper and better subscription and stock management to reduce waste. And, of course, we pledged to share stories to help support other businesses, too. That’s through Ethos, and the work we do with clients to embed sustainability in their organisations and events, with the content we create and connections we make. As a result, I achieved my Carbon Literacy certificate – as the 22,020th person to certify. Now, the Carbon Literacy Project has certified over 100,000 citizens across 33 nations – and rising. And you too can join the rapidly-growing movement and get Carbon Literate. I know the team is celebrating tonight in Manchester and I can’t make it over… but HUGE congratulations on the scale of that ambition and everything you’ve achieved so far. It’s vitally important work – a real cultural shift – and highly recommended (even if you think you’re all over your carbon impact!) #100kCarbonLiterate #carbonfootprint #lowcarbon #sustainability

Chief Technologist, IT Strategy and Sustainability Advisor | The Circular Mile | ConsciouslyTech | WCIT and City of London Freeman | Born at 325 ppm
Did you know that - despite all the skyscrapers and big office buildings - SMEs make up over 98% of all businesses within the Square Mile. of the City of London? And with many of them working in professional services with large enterprise customers who have onerous supply chain compliance requirements, it's more important than ever that SMEs know how to get started on the journey to Net Zero. But many don't know where to start, and struggle to quantify their carbon footprint or identify ways to reduce it. The Heart of the City is a charity that supports SMEs in the City of London to be a force for good. This free training course over four modules helps you create a Net Zero action plan. If you are: ✅ an SME (up to 250 employees with more than 50% of your operations within the Square Mile) ✅ a charity ✅ a social enterprise ✅ a livery company or ✅ a tenant of the City of London Corporation then you qualify to apply for a place on this training programme. If you work in procurement, supply chain management or ESG / CRS in a large enterprise where City SMEs are in your supply chain, then please encourage them to enrol on this course so they can better help you with your Scope 3 reporting and supply chain compliance requirements. We know that ESG reporting frameworks are becoming more numerous, moving from voluntary to regulatory and asking for more detailed data. Even large enterprises struggle to keep up, so SMEs with few resources and tight margins need a helping hand. We can only get to Net Zero if we all work together. I know how committed The Heart of the City are to purpose, social value, responsibility and inclusion so please make use of this great resource if you qualify, and support them if your business relies on City SMEs. In partnership with the City of London, Heart of the City is running a free course for organisations with up to 250 employees with ties to the City of London to help you measure and cut your business’s carbon emissions and put an achievable net zero action plan in place. The deadline for the next intake is 5 January 2024. To register your interest in this free course apply here: https://lnkd.in/eHXqszDh #sustainability #smallbusinesssupport #netzero

Many congratulations to Foodbuy UK & Ireland on their accreditation as a Silver Carbon Literate Organisation by The Carbon Literacy Project Phil Korbel It is an impressive accomplishment in such a short space of time. Credit to the vision of the management team Andy Porter COO leading this delivery with the support of his fab sustainability team guiding the organisation as a whole to deliver on the wider Compass Group UK & Ireland #NetZero #2030 #TransitionPlan #Scope3emissions Karl Atkins Harinder Singh Maya Gadhvi Rachel Eyre İsa Türkmen Carolyn Ball 🌍🍴💚 et al. With the recent acquisition of CH&CO organisational changes may mean that Silver status maybe temporarily lost as the procurement and logistics side of the business grows but it is great to see a sector leader delivering on a very ambitious corporate strategy, playing their part in a complex food system, looking to build resilience and future proofing the business in an uncertain world where there are not only considerations of #Scope3 emissions reductions but also the broader holistic picture to consider both environmental, social and ethical. I look forward to seeing how Foodbuy peeps continue their net zero and sustainability journey, playing their part in a complex, multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder food system considering climate change mitigation and sustainable supply sourcing from farm to fork considering equity, social justice, nature, health and wellbeing - feeding the nation with delicious and health giving food sustainably sourced with a lighter footprint on the earth! 🌍 NHS Supply Chain Nick Vadis Compass Group Chartwells UK Jonathan Davies Levy Restaurant Associates UK It is a challenging journey which will only get more challenging and change has to happen at pace and at scale but this behavioural change piece, is, I believe a vital part of the transition that must take place - so well done all 👏👏👏 Mike Barry Heidi Spurrell, MSc, PGDip, BEM Sarah Calcutt City Harvest London FareShare UK Chloe Andrews-Jones The Worshipful Company of Fuellers The Woolmen Emmanuel Cohen Livery Climate Action Group Mark Maslin Steve Jones Tracy Parker Lee Parker Samantha Guiher-Greig Equinoxe Solutions 💚🌍💙🚛💚🌍💙🚛 💚🌍💙

🌍 Exciting Week at London Climate Action Week! 🌍 I had the pleasure of joining a fantastic panel of speakers at my first London Climate Action Week, hosted by Fleet Street Quarter, to discuss whether London can still be a hub for the net zero global economy. 🚀 Our discussions highlighted a recurring theme: the UK has immense potential to lead and benefit from transformation, innovation, and decarbonisation. However, to truly unlock this opportunity, we need consistent policy-making and clear political messaging to instill confidence in investors, businesses, and consumers. Key takeaways from our panel with Alison Gowman CBE, Tessa F., and Gavin Starks: 1. The insurance industry plays a crucial role in de-risking investment in climate solutions and adaptation. 2. Skills development is vital for fostering new industries, spreading the benefits of decarbonisation geographically, and building capacity within existing companies. 3. SMEs are essential to UK Plc's supply chains, and must be better supported in their emissions reporting. Let's invest in our future by enabling major investments in energy, food, transport, industry, and education. The time to act is now! 🌱💼 #LCAW2024 #NetZero #SustainableFuture #Innovation #PolicyMatters #InvestInChange Photo Jack Ladenburg
