Primark's CEO Paul Marchant has made his aim clear: To increase the number of stores from 400+ to 530 by 2026. It includes a plan to more than triple its stores in the US. But with a business known for fast fashion, our task at Continuous was two-fold; to challenge the perception that Primark was only about price, to shift the conversation from one of product to one of brand. Secondly, to make sure everyone across the globe was aligned and onboard, that they understood and believed in what Primark was about what they were doing. This is the most embarrasing way to learn something 😅 At primark we have weekly meetings with our line managers in our departments. We walk around, like a client will, and we take decisions for the next week’s planning. 🗓 As we were discussing possible action plans for boosting our sales I noticed a really ugly hanging polo. And I told him: "I bet we don’t sell many of these, who wears this kind of product?" He laughed, and said to me: “I do, you should take a look at the figures” It was one of our best sellers. 🪙 After I got over the embarrasment and the shock that maybe I do not dress as well as I thought... I realized he gave me two important lessons: ✔️ I can’t let my personal taste affect the commercial decisions I take. ✔️ If I want to sell something, I have to look at what the market demands, not what I personally like I didn't expect to learn something this way, but it has been effective, I'm sure I won't forget it. Associated British Foods PLC (LSE:ABF) has made a robust start to the 2024 fiscal year, with its Primark division playing a pivotal role, according to a post-update assessment by Liberum. Repeating its 'buy' advice and £28 a share price target, the boutique investment bank said Primark's 2.1% like-for-like growth was "commendable" given the challenging comparison against a previous 11% increase. This performance is a key driver behind AB Foods' increased confidence in exceeding a 10% adjusted operating margin for Primark in FY’24E, signalling a strong year ahead for the retail giant, Liberum added. A BBC investigation exposes child labor in the global perfume industry, involving fragrance houses that supply brands like L’Oréal and Estée Lauder. The brands claim they conduct all the necessary audits and are against any form of exploitation. The fragrance houses say the same. So who was aware of this? I’m pretty sure no one in these companies is in favor of these kinds of practices; they all have supply chain policies and audit processes implemented. But the fact is that these audits are not working. What contributes to this reality is the pressure on prices and margins, and this is a shared responsibility of all of us, as a society. Conscious capitalism is about ensuring fair relations between everyone in the ecosystem (suppliers, employees, customers, communities, investors, environment). If it’s not good for everyone, it's not good for anyone. We all lose. We fail as executives, as consumers, as human beings. What is behind the product I am buying? ………………….
