We know kids do better when fathers are involved. Research from organizations such as the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) and across the spectrum shows that positive father involvement supports better outcomes in childhood development. Whether it be the social and emotional wellbeing of children, lessening of criminal justice exposure or for our focus- the promotion of better school performance. Having a dad involved, especially during the most formative years is highly beneficial to the overall wellbeing of the child. Too often, entities such as Child Support, Family Court, or Schools ostracize the father, doing more of a disservice to the family unit. From the intake process to decisions made on behalf of the child, many entities are privy to knowing and working with mom more, if not at all, than dad. The Baltimore City Head Start (BCHS)+ Center for Urban Families (CFUF) Father Engagement endeavor seeks to make father inclusion a priority. This effort, in partnership with BCHS and MEF associates allows us to activate our Practitioners Leadership Institute (PLI) to implement, assess, and improve a model for organizational change within early childhood agencies and organizations that promotes the ongoing engagement of fathers for children’s success. 🌈 "Materialistic" possessions may come and go, but the "Lessons" we teach our children 'Lasts Forever'. 📝 Parents, guardians, or mentors, plays an important role by making children feel loved and building strong relationships. Our love, care, and emotional support are what leave a lasting impression on children. Teaching our children the value of: - Kindness - Empathy - Perseverance, which is way more valuable than money. 🧠 According to Jean Illsley Clarke's research, parents sometimes spoil their children by: ◽ Giving them too much - Time, money, material possessions. ◽ Doing too much for them - Doing things for them that the children could and should be doing themselves. ◽ Lack of discipline - Not holding the children accountable for their behaviors. 🎯 Here's few ways to prevent overindulging and instilling important life lessons and values in our children: ➡️ Teach our kids about "enough" by using the word in everyday situations. ➡️ Help them understand the difference between 'what they really need' and 'what they just want'. ➡️ Give them things they need and some things they want, based on our values. But don't give them everything they ask for, set limits. ➡️ Give them age appropriate chores at home, even from a young age (like 3 years old). ➡️ Stick to the rules and consequences you set. If they break a rule, teach them so they learn. ➡️ Don't always rescue them when they make mistakes or avoid responsibilities. ➡️ Be supportive, but let them learn from facing the results of their actions. 🌟 Remember! Part l For The Benefit of Our Child’s Life The ability to have a child does not make one a man or a father nor one a woman or a mother. It is the raising of one’s child that does so, for being there for them daily, nightly, hourly, minute by minute, at every second, which can be difficult, stressful, and time-consuming, is what it takes to be a father and a mother. Catering to their needs and desires is the core of a parent’s curriculum while teaching them assertiveness and independence. As it has been said, those are the fun moments. This means showing them how to work the differences between them and their siblings. That will help them learn to understand how to work together with others outside of their family. It also means how to become persistent in their endeavors. Having the resolve to cultivate and manage our children’s lives is conducive to helping them grow mature and valuable minds. In an environment we create for them, if it is a healthy one, they then thrive because of the nurturing they receive from us. Courage and strength are required when raising a child. After their conception is announced, the rules change in our lives, and they must be accepted without question. Life is no longer about us but about our children. All avocations, methods of recreation, if possible, even one’s vocation, are to be put behind us or, at the least, on hold. It is our child or children who need us full-time. Our responsibility is them, and excuses for not being there for them are and should be anathema. There is not anything that we would not do for our children. They are our lives, and we choose to have them. Even if this were not so, if any of them were ‘unplanned’ or even ‘an accident,’ an abhorrent term, we do what is necessary for them. That means going above and beyond our responsibilities to our children. In Judaism, it is said that we each have chosen our parents. Moreover, we have a choice in choosing our parents, for we wish to learn from the experience, be it a good or bad one. NAFSCE - National Association for Family, School, and Community Engagement offered an insightful session on engaging fathers. Finding ways to welcome fathers to increase involvement & engagement in schools is critical. This was a reminder to be intentional in efforts to bring fathers to schools. Many schools are not equipped to relate and / or understand the needs of fathers. An asset based approach to fathers can have a strong impact on a child.s future just as much as an asset based approach to mothers. Let us recognize the vital role fathers play in shaping the lives of their children. You know you’re doing some right when you find this marker board in your 10 year old daughters room. We work hard to instill in our kids values that will make them good humans as they grow to adults. We not perfect and never will be. I see too many kids being raised by teachers and nanny’s and then they wonder why their kids turned out a way they didn’t intend. If you chose to bring life into this world, it’s your responsibility to raise good humans. You can’t delegate that to others! Don’t give your kids all the things you didn’t have! Family is the smallest unit of the society and the first point of socialization for a child. As a child grows, it learns the ways, mannerisms and culture of the family. Parents and older siblings become role models to whom the child looks up to. Some families make the mistake of saying "he/she is just a child", thereby undermining the fact that a child learns through observing, mimicking and interacting with its family and immediate environment. The family being the first point of a child's socialization influences the behaviors and culture it imbibes, the values it cherishes and the kind of adult it becomes in future. If every family understands its role in the society, of modeling true and worthwhile values to children, then our society will become safer. How can a mother ask her daughter of 18 years old whom she knows isn't working why she is not contributing to the family upkeep? What exactly is she expecting from such a girl at such age? When a father says to his 16 years old son, John, your mates are buying cars and building houses and you are here talking about going to school, what exactly is he telling John to do? Many families have pushed their young ones into doing despicable things that make the ears tingle. The pressure from many families have caused the untimely death of future potentials that could change our society and the world for good. Every family should teach the children good morals, values and culture. Teach children to learn, respect adults, help the needy, assist elders, work, and to deal honestly with all men.
