Happy 20th Birthday to us! We interviewed Malcolm Wilson for his memories from IPEX's birth to becoming an industry leader, recognised for his knowledge, experience, and insights. I set up IPEX Consulting Ltd on 12 Sept 2003. Contacts said “yes we’ll definitely use you..." I resigned from a major consultancy with a promise of being retained in my existing project. This evaporated within a week and we survived with no work for 7 months. I marvel at any consultants that set up and immediately juggle projects! Over this time I learned the craft of business development, produced thought leadership material, maintained contacts and talked to them about their projects and issues. God bless a handful of saviours in 2004 who enabled us to show what we could do – Robin Groth and Anthony Oyo (HSBC Rail), the late Peter Randall (HMRI) and Stefan Sanders (Arup). This included: · investment and residual value risk review for Cl.395, then writing and developing the technical specification; · running relationship building and problem-solving workshops for HSBC Rail and their train operators, exploring issues on fleets; and · managing delivery of Railway Safety Regulations 1999 exemptions for slam door rolling stock. As the brand began to develop, we were engaged further: · business advisor on the ROSCOs inquiry for the Competition Commission; · the McNulty rail value-for-money study with Arup; · multiple re-franchisings both for DfT team or bidders; · part of the Operator of Last Resort team; · the European harmonisation project with ATOC, the CER, the ERA and RSSB; and · feasibility studies, business cases, procurements, and bids. In 2013 we embarked on building an employed team. The decision was not easy and I applaud anyone who does this. Having seen so many icons of our industry retire and take out of circulation their enormous accumulation of wisdom, this seemed devoid of legacy value. I realised that through building something I would provide interesting career and leadership opportunities for highly capable and motivated people with whom I could perpetuate my experience. We were helped by some experienced consultancy and business build-to-sell experts who provided guidance and experience. The company really began to develop once we started to identify some rail industry seniors who also caught the vision and brought immense strengths to our ambitions and are still with us today in our senior leadership team. The name IPEX is an acronym made up of our values that we always seek to honour, regardless of our role. We thought deeply about this and we knew that there were certain behaviours and qualities for which we would always wish to be known. From here, our focus is to build the culture and dynamic towards even greater team enrichment, brand, service ownership, and interest in self-determination and steering the business as a problem-solving and customer service organisation.

What a day to be finally announcing this exciting news!! Surrounded by some amazing, driven and inspirational women 🙌 as well as the equally amazing Tim English! After taking some much needed time off after almost 16 years in property and project/asset management, where I worked in almost every role in the private rented sector to then moving over to social housing/temporary accommodation helping to house thousands of venerable people on a nightly basis. And where I fully immersed myself into the industry, learnt, grew, evolved, looked to inspire and make a positive impact, innovate, influence, mentor and lead and it quickly became my passion. This wasnt always easy and in some of the roles was quite challenging and to have my voice heard and my ideas accepted because I was a woman in areas where it was very male dominated but I do love a challenge and it's made me the person I am today 😊 with a huge bag of successes as well as the not so successful outcomes along the way. But, I am proud to have done and been a part of all of it. I am hugely grateful to those who consistently supported me and backed me, whom were a large group of mentors, colleagues, friends and family as well as complete strangers......to you I’d like to say thank you!
