Herts & Beds CE Club: What Does Sustainability Mean to You? What a fantastic event hosted by VolkerWessels UK in their impressive #Hoddesdon facilities! Richard Tavener, Marion Clapp, Jack Dudley and James Nightingale from RDT Architects, along with Chris Mitchell from Boast Architects, attended the latest Herts & Beds Constructing Excellence Club gathering to dive into VolkerWessels’ “People-Planet-Purpose” framework, presented by Adrian Shah-Cundy. Their commitment to making 2020-2030 their ‘Decade of Action’ is inspiring! We were also treated to valuable insights from Nick Reilly and Rondi Allan of Sustainable X, who discussed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and revealed that ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’ emerged as the top priority in the member survey. The event continued the discussions for us at RDT on how to better align our sustainability and ESG goals with those of our clients and the community:- Economic Responsibility: We aim to minimise material waste in projects or initiatives to incorporate recycled or sustainable materials, reducing environmental impact and operational costs. Social Responsibility: Through RDT’s designs we try to cater for diverse needs, including accessibility for people with disabilities and features that foster inclusive environments. Governance Integrity: Adhering to ethical standards in design and management not only strengthens our credibility but also positions us as leaders in our industry. It was a valuable discussion, and we’re excited to continue growing our ESG initiatives. #ConstructingExcellence #Herts #Beds #Sustainability #Networking #SDG #ESG

On Site at Basinghall Avenue Orbit recently visited one of our sustainable retrofit projects in the City of London, currently being delivered in collaboration with Stiff + Trevillion Architects and BW: Workplace Experts. The project is taking shape at the headquarters of Standard Chartered Bank in London, at 1 Basinghall Avenue. The ground floor entrance lobby will be remodelled to enable space for a new cafe or restaurant. Future employees can look forward to enjoying a new rooftop terrace, with biodiverse greening, as well as enhanced end of journey facilities at basement level. The project involves a full replacement of the building’s primary shell and core infrastructure, to significantly reduce the building’s carbon footprint. All while the building is partially occupied. Stay tuned for updates as the project progresses. #OrbitProjects #CityOfLondon #DestinationCity #RetrofitFirst

The future of construction depends on our ability to work together. The challenge is significant, but the rewards are even greater — according to Terry Stocks in the latest of our series of articles with Building Magazine. Terry, Director of Property UK&I for Project and Programme Services at AtkinsRéalis, argues that collaboration in construction has often been seen as a luxury, a “nice to have” that, while beneficial, isn’t always prioritised. This perspective, however, is increasingly outdated and counterproductive. In an environment where projects are growing more complex and stakes are higher than ever, collaboration is not just advantageous — it is essential. No, we didn't win the 2024 Euros. No, this isn't just another construction update. Yes! The rumours are true: we've secured planning consent for a 106,020 sq ft development at One Passage Street, Bristol. Perched along the Floating Harbour, One Passage Street transcends its traditional role as a mere workspace. It represents a dynamic hub for dialogue, idea exchange, inspiration, and revitalisation—a place where the community can come together to engage and share knowledge. This thriving cultural enclave is brimming with untapped potential. Featuring interlaced terracing cascading down its facade, seamless integration with nature, and limitless opportunities for creativity, this building stands in a class of its own. The development is designed to be carbon neutral, achieving net-zero carbon emissions. We are committed to an 11% year-on-year reduction in carbon emissions, setting a new standard for sustainable building practices. Situated in a heritage-rich context, the site required a balance of historical and modern elements to enhance the public realm. The innovative design achieves this balance brilliantly. Internally, a huge congratulations to all who played a part in bringing this bold project to fruition: Dan Ross, James Hanton-Parr, and Matt Leach. This week, we attended NLA’s inaugural Retrofit Summit at the historic Livery Hall at Guildhall to hear from voices across the built environment talk about the potentials of adaptive reuse and circular principles in revitalising old buildings. There were a myriad of topics discussed such as: ▪️ The role of retrofit in community regeneration ▪️ How retrofit can tie into the circular economy ▪️ The need for consistent net zero carbon policies ▪️ The importance of capturing and sharing data to create benchmarks ▪️ The limitations of retrofit and how to decide when it is the best option We also had a look at some exciting retrofit projects in the pipeline including: ▫️ London Museum by Stanton Williams ▫️ Zodiac House by shedkm ▫️ 150 Aldersgate Street by Fletcher Priest Architects ▫️ Peterborough Court by John Robertson Architects Underpinning all the presentations and discussions was the importance of passion and knowledge in championing retrofit. Retrofit becoming the first consideration in projects only happens when data and findings are widespread and developers, engineers, architects and planners are enthusiastic about saving the unsexy buildings. Overall, it was a very insightful and hopeful discussion on how we can start to shift the industry mindset and set out a more sustainable future. #Retrofit #NLARetrofitSummit #BuiltEnvironment #AdaptiveReuse
