Our Board of Directors met in Paris for the first in-person meeting of the year.    In this occasion we welcomed a special guest from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Mr. Keisuke Sadamori, to discuss key takeaways from their report "Electricity Grids and Secure Energy Transitions" published on 17 October 2023. Facing the #EnergyTransition in Europe: How are EnR members accelerating the global challenge? 📍 A visit to Germany Susanne Schmelcher, Director Districts & Cities Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena), summarizes the current development in her country. 🗨 “The local #heattransition is one of the central challenges of the German energy transformation. Small municipalities, in particular, face many technical and economic questions when it comes to building #heatnetworks. We need individual solutions for the various local conditions that can also create value, energy security, and innovation at the regional level While the availability of municipal or private investment funds plays an important role in #heatnetworks in existing neighborhoods, relatively cost-effective measures for initiation and support can lay the groundwork for sustainable projects. A well-functioning #network of local actors and stakeholders, extending beyond municipal administration, is crucial. The development of heat networks, like municipal heat planning and implementation, should be seen as a stakeholder process. Depending on local conditions, the specific implementation on-site must be tailored individually. Various interests and options along operator models must be balanced to create a coherent overall picture. Today, our Secretary General Angelo Ferrante participated as a panellist at MEDREG - Mediterranean Energy Regulators Presidents’ Workshop in Selinunte. In the session "Cross-Border Energy Trade and Navigating Isolated Systems; the Role of Coherent Regulation" he presented Med-TSO’s Mediterranean Masterplan of Interconnections. This flagship publication, first delivered in 2018 and updated in 2020 and 2022 with EC co-funding, gathers all interconnection projects studied by our experts. He detailed the Masterplan's coherent activities, including defining consistent energy scenarios, selecting future interconnection projects for the defined time horizon, setting up a reference model of the regional power system for market and network studies, analyzing network behaviour (load flow calculations), identifying investments needed to meet security requirements, and performing a shared Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) for new investments. Mr Ferrante also emphasized the role of cross-border interconnections in the Mediterranean from a TSO perspective. He highlighted how Med-TSO promotes the efficient operation of interconnected electrical systems through data exchange web platforms and common protocols, supports the EC initiative for the Mediterranean Grid Code on managing international interconnections, and affirmed the importance of integrating Mediterranean power systems for economic and social development in the region.
