Regenerative landscape initiatives, whether mature or at the initial stages of their transition journey, can benefit from mutual learning by connecting, collaborating, and sharing experiences. 👩🌾With collective growth crucial to an equitable food systems transition, Regen10 is fostering awareness about how regenerative landscape collaboration can drive transformation. In 2023, we engaged with landscape-level initiatives worldwide, reaching out to organizations representing over 140 initiatives in 50 different countries. Alongside 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People, we published our initial research findings in our Landscapes Discussion Brief. The Future of Food: Regenerative, Localized, and Circular Inspired by a talk by Marc Buckley 🌍 climate activist and social entrepreneur, I'm pondering the future of food systems. The current globalized industrial model has significant drawbacks. But what does a more resilient and sustainable alternative look like? Buckley proposes a decentralized, localized, and regenerative economic model. This vision focuses on (1) Local production, (2) Sustainable practices; regenerative agriculture that nourishes the soil, protects biodiversity, and promotes long-term food security is a cornerstone of this model, and (3) Local food networks by building robust networks between farmers, distributors, and consumers strengthens local economies and ensures everyone has access to fresh, healthy food. This approach aligns closely with the principles of a circular economy. By doing this we can minimize waste and maximize resource use by: Reducing food loss and waste: Optimizing food storage, transportation, and consumption can significantly reduce spoilage. Composting food scraps: Turning food scraps into nutrient-rich compost nourishes the soil and closes the loop. Supporting local businesses: Small farmers and food producers are more likely to prioritize sustainable practices and reinvest profits back into the community. A shift towards a regenerative, localized food system requires innovation. New technologies that improve efficiency and sustainability in food production are crucial. The new report from the World Bank, ‘Recipe for a Livable Planet’, lays out the challenges and opportunities in transitioning agriculture to a sustainable future. Here, at Syngenta Group, we welcome this new global framework for showing how urgent change is, and the positive impact that a shift to sustainable systems of food production will have on the planet. Through targeted interventions and new ways of working, the report shows the potential upsides are immense – a world that can feed more people, protect livelihoods for farmers, as well as restore the environment. With our new sustainability priorities, we’ve committed to playing our part. For example, we’re aiming to enable the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices across 50 million hectares of land by 2030. And, at the same time, we also want to launch new programs for vegetable farmers that will raise participating smallholder profits by 10%. I am really encouraged that Syngenta sees the benefits of transitioning agriculture away from chemical and fossil intensive practices and having worked with them on and off over the years, know the excellent capabilities of their UK arm. As a firm, Greensphere is investing in science-led, evidence-based bioscience solutions, but find that these are also sometimes significant disrupters to traditional chemical/fossil based supply chains. I am keen to understand how Syngenta view this transition economically both for themselves and their 100% parent, China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina) - how do you square off growth in one area with reducing profits in another?

The article offers a compelling case for regenerative agriculture as a solution to climate change and biodiversity loss, but it overlooks key challenges. While the call for investment is strong, the $3.6 billion cited is insufficient for the global scale of the task. Without equitable access to funds, smallholder farmers may be left behind, widening existing inequalities. The emphasis on collaboration across value chains is critical, but the article downplays the complexities of aligning diverse interests among businesses, policymakers, and farmers. Furthermore, relying on voluntary corporate initiatives risks greenwashing without regulatory enforcement to ensure accountability. The ambitious goal of scaling regenerative practices to 40% of cropland lacks a clear roadmap for overcoming systemic barriers, particularly in regions with weak financial infrastructure. To truly make regenerative agriculture the norm, robust regulatory frameworks and more strategic financial models are needed. Now is the time to move beyond vision and take decisive action to create a sustainable, resilient agricultural future. What if we could feed the next billion people to heal our planet? Growers, farmers, manufacturers, packers, retailers, and consumers have the power to create a nature positive future for the food industry. Currently, our food systems contribute 34% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In New Zealand alone, we send about 12 and a half million tonnes of waste to landfill every year – the vast majority of which is compostable organic matter which emits methane. This contributes to Aotearoa being among the highest in the world for CO2 emissions. Rather than bending nature to produce our kai or sourcing better ingredients, we can redesign our food systems to regenerative our living systems. Redesigning how our ingredients are produced, sourced, packaged, sold and consumed - we can provide better outcomes for te taiao. Making the switch from just better sourcing to activating a circular economy greatly reduces biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas emissions, alongside increasing our total food output and financial gain for our farmers. Tomorrow Farms is on a mission to reinvent our favorite foods so they’re better for people, kinder to animals, and easier on the planet. It started to bring this vision to life with Bored Cow, which is made with dairy-identical milk protein from fermentation instead of cows. But from the beginning, the team knew they couldn't just say they were more sustainable. Ben Berman, CEO and co-founder, shared, "If we’re going to talk the talk, we better have the data to back up the walk as well!" So they turned to Planet FWD to quantify and report the impact of their innovation through a life cycle assessment (LCA) Benchmark Analysis against dairy and non-dairy milks. The results? From “farm to factory” when compared to conventional and organic dairy milk, Bored Cow requires up to: 👩🌾 96% less land 🚰 uses up to 67% less water, and 📉 emits up to 44% fewer greenhouse gas emissions Now, the company is using LCAs to support its product development, and uses this work to "empower individuals and families across the country to make more sustainable choices with confidence."
