The Culture The hard truth is that too many operators looked at licensed cannabis retail and all they saw was a fresh opportunity in a billion-dollar industry. What they got instead was an ass-kicking. Sure, selling weed from a licensed storefront in the light of day is cool as f*ck, but it's also hard as f*ck. The 8 Horseman of The Weedpocalypse ride hard and they will take you out. So, what to do? First things first. Stop wasting time complaining about the injustice of it all on LinkedIn. Complaining is not the solution. Nobody put a gun to your head and forced you into the business. You are not a victim.  So, just stop. The bottom line is that you must develop strategies to hold off the Horsemen if you hope to survive. If you prefer solutions over screaming into the social media abyss, I’ll follow up this post with some strategies I used at Tropicanna as well as some that I’ve seen other successful retailers use in my time with deeproots partners. Be advised: None of them are magic bullets. All of them require real work, imagination, consistency, and a positive attitude in the darkest hours. But it can be done. Look around. There are successful operators out there. You can be one, too.

Societal standards are how this healing plant got demonized. This post really resonated with me as a medical cannabis patient who, for me, cannabis is not just medicine. I do like to have fun too. Society often shames people like me for having fun. But why? Just because I’m an adult medical cannabis patient, doesn’t mean I’m not entitled to joy in my life just like how society encourages children who are patients to be able to run, play, and have joy in their lives. There IS joy and fun in cannabis and no one should be shamed for it. I spend a lot of my time thinking about and fighting the stigma and stereotypes of marijuana consumers. I created my nonprofit Cruel Consequences: Portraits Of Misguided Law cruelconsequences.org to work at breaking down the stigma of cannabis consumers who were criminalized. I shared these stories with legislators and the public and continue to educate this way. Recently, I put these stories in my first book, The Human Cost of Marijuana Prohibition. I’m working on a second book that I hope shows that medical cannabis patients are fun while adult use consumers also are very knowledgeable and serious about the plant. When I was a kid, along with my family's consumption, this is what represented weed for me. It was fun, silly, chill, and not a big deal at all. Even back then I knew this type of "stoner" stuff was just an act. But today, much of the fun can sometimes be missing in this space. People word-police, complain, and get into their feelings about certain things we call the plant. Some folks (mainly new to the plant science-y types) think that everything has to be so "professional" so we don't hurt the legalization push. And that for us and this plant to be accepted into its rightful place into society, we should consume for certain reasons or act a certain way. I've got news for you, that's not how this works! We do this our way, because conforming to societal standards is the death of creativity and joy. People are so focused on running their business and making money that they forget why they wanted to be a part of the industry to begin with; and if it's money, you're in the wrong place. We have always been a subculture with our own way of doing things, regardless of lame folks expressing their displeasure. If legalization to you means losing your sense of humor, you can miss me with that. So please, bring the fun back to weed, I need to laugh at something other than my bank account and disrespectful messages in my DMs. #cannabisculture #cannabiscommunity #cannabisindustry

Typically, this is the moment I hop up on my soapbox and rant about superpowers and super brands and how dispensaries must deliver a unique and compelling branded retail experience that gives people a reason to buy weed from them. Well, surprise. I'm not doing that today (Tomorrow, maybe. We'll see.) But the bottom line remains the same: Weed is not the reason why people come to a dispensary. They come for the vibe, the culture, and the community. They come to learn. But who provides all that for them? An optimistic perspective, yep you read right, optimistic! 🌻 ✨ Did you know that failure can actually underscore the path to success? Think about it. Failures often serve as checkpoints, leading us towards innovations and regulatory adjustments. They build resilience and make way for bolder decisions. 🎯 • Some might remember Green Growth Brands, their meteoric rise and unfortunate decline caught quite a few eyes. Their aggressive expansion ended in bankruptcy. The takeaway? Over-expansion can be hazardous. 💥 • Next in our list is Wayland Group. Once a promising company, it spiraled down due to poor leadership and lack of strategic focus. Lesson learnt? Strategy and leadership are crucial for a business to thrive. 🗺️ • MedMen is another example. An emblem of high-rolling cannabis lifestyle, it crashed due to unsustainable spending and management turmoil. So what does this signify? Frugality and clear direction at the helm are quintessential. 🚀 Sure, these are tales of weed companies that didn't quite make the cut. But they also serve as a testament to the challenges faced by the weed industry and the lessons picked up along the way. 💪 Intriguing, isn't it, how even the downfall of these weed businesses teaches us so much? 😊 Let's remember, every ending has the power to usher in a new beginning, and every challenge is potential learning. As an introvert, it's been a draining (but GREAT) past few weeks: Hall of Flowers in CA - jet lag, plus new to CA market made this one more stressful - but as always, the cannabis community is so welcoming. With tailwinds from HOF + 420 upcoming, Woodstock is on-track for it's best wholesale month EVER (very low bar, but we'll take the small wins to celebrate). Def worthwhile exhibiting there with Lowell Farms Inc.. Techstars Boston Accelerator Mentor Madness (sorry can't say "Magic" just feels wrong). Pulled in a few other alums like Joe Lemay & Max Faingezicht as it's been 10 yrs since I was in the program (yikes!)... and connected with Kerty Levy & Aidan Kittredge and their awesome new class. Not a ton of consumer focus in this batch so not sure how much value I can add - but love a bunch of these companies! NECANN - biggest cannabis tradeshow in Northeast... not going to the official show (Woodstock isn't in MA YET) - but will be at 1 or 2 of the parties on Fri and look forward to catching up with my former peeps... One of the things I've realized about my introversion... is that, it's easier if you love what you're doing / you're mission-driven and you surround yourself with great people... Yes, I still exert a lot of energy at these big events - but I also GET a ton of energy from talking to others about what they're building and seeing people I used to work with and how much they continue to grow & crush. No more big shows for a while after this Friday... time to recuperate this wkend!
