#BCFNews We're building up to seven new vessels that will enter service between 2029 – 2032 on our busiest routes servicing #MetroVancouver, #VancouverIsland and the #SunshineCoast. Here's a first look at conceptual renders of this new class of vessel. Learn more: https://ow.ly/xu6z50QHYrL Each vessel will carry up to 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers - that’s up to 44% more vehicles and up to 75% more passengers than the retiring vessels. The new vessels will provide more capacity across the system and improve how we get our customers where they need to be. The design calls for engines capable of using bio and renewable fuels, and includes a battery-hybrid propulsion system that will allow for conversion to full battery-electric operation once shore-based recharging infrastructure becomes available. Today, we issued a Request for Supplier Qualification (RFSQ) for the New Major Vessels program. The RFSQ is available through the international shipbroker Clarksons, as well as on bcbid.gov.bc.ca. It will close on March 22, 2024. Qualified shipyards will then have the opportunity to take part in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, currently expected to occur in the summer of 2024. “These vessels – green, efficient and standardized – represent the future of ferry travel in our province. Llwybr Newydd | The Wales Transport Strategy sets out an ambitious mode share target of 45% of journeys to be undertaken by walking, cycling and public transport by 2040, but what is the recipe to achieving these targets?   Clare Sheffield and I shared our thoughts earlier this week as part of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and CILT (UK) joint CPD series. We highlighted four key ingredients for success: Having a credible plan, establishing public consensus, securing funding/finance and improved data to inform decision making.   It was great to hear from fellow presenters Alison Thomas and Laura Norman who set out the context behind the targets and the significant changes to transport policy in Wales in response to the climate emergency. They provided insight on the recently updated WelTAG guidance – which further embeds the sustainable transport hierarchy, modal shift targets and new approach to road building within transport decision making, all underpinned by the Well-being of Future Generations Act.   Reflecting on the discussion, the transport dial has really shifted in recent years under the leadership of Lee Waters MS, and Wales is increasingly referenced as a leader globally on its policy response to the climate emergency. There is lots of work still to be done of course, but fundamental steps in terms of legislation and direction have been set and the challenge to the profession is clear – looking forward to continuing the conversation through the remainder of the webinar series. #WeAreArup #CIHTCymru #ModalShift #Transport #CPD

One of the common messages today from ourselves in the CTTC, our colleagues from across the industry including Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and the Go Ahead group is the vast number of opportunities that exist throughout the industry including drivers and mechanics. Apprenticeships offer excellent opportunities for young people interested in a rapidly evolving field of expertise that will be vital in helping our country to achieve our 2030 emissions targets. We also discussed the need for an equitable approach by government to fare reduction initiatives, the need for changes to VAT rules to support the transition towards more sustainable and accessible fleets and traffic management interventions to improve efficiency and reliability of services through more biased road share and better facilities for coach tourism and event travel in all major cities and towns.

This week, from 5-11 August 2024, is National Rail Safety Week. Rail Safety Week brings together the rail workforce, law enforcement, government, community groups, and organisations to emphasise the critical importance of safety on and around railways, encouraging the community to engage in safe rail practices. This annual initiative is led by the TrackSAFE Foundation, which aims to reduce fatalities and injuries on the rail network. Sadly, rail-related fatalities are all too common. Between 2016 and 2023, there was an average of 83 rail-related fatalities per year, equating to 7 per month. To enhance rail safety, Acusensus has partnered with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), Transport for NSW and Transport Heritage NSW on initiatives to monitor rail crossings. These efforts include data collection and analysis of behaviours at rail tracks in Victoria and New South Wales. According to the TrackSAFE Foundation, most rail-related fatalities and incidents are preventable. By understanding these behaviours, we can work towards reducing the prevalence of rail safety incidents to keep our railways safer for all.
