Primary care is the only health care component where an increased supply is associated with better population health and more equitable outcomes. That’s the conclusion of a report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The report went on to say we need better primary care – where doctors with different skills share information and work in teams. We need more direct primary care. And we need more experimentation with ways to produce low-cost, high-quality primary care by operating outside the traditional third-party-payer system. #digitalhealth #primarycare #healthcare https://lnkd.in/eNhkqGSP

🌱 We're proud to announce that Sodexo, in partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals now offers 100% plant-based entrees on patient lunch and dinner menus across its hospitals. This move aligns perfectly with the city's food-based climate goals of cutting emissions by 33% by 2030. The results have been outstanding! With 90% patient satisfaction and 50-60% of patients choosing to try the new plant-based options, it's clear that this shift is making a real impact. And it doesn't stop there! Sodexo's AI-enabled patient experience technology, Experiencia, has collected feedback and guided patients and staff through this delicious transition. Sodexo and NYC H+H recognize the powerful impact that plant-based diets can have on preventive care and chronic illness treatment. By embracing plant-based menus, NYC Health + Hospitals isn't just improving patient health; they're also championing planetary health and supporting the city's ambitious goals to reduce carbon emissions. Consultant | Healthcare Actuary | Transparency Czar | Grill Master | Transplanted Yinzer | Empty Nester
A couple of years back, I read results of a survey where only 80% of respondents indicated they are sure the earth is round. So, when I read last week that 94% support healthcare price transparency (link to survey press release in the comments), that’s a mind-boggling number. This transparency movement is real and it’s a runaway train. The healthcare industry made this too complicated. I understand the “same procedure” can require different levels of complexity and support; and complications can arise; and there’s unforeseen issues; and this means the same procedure has a different underlying cost for different patients… But, I also know that when I roll into Fogo de Chao with some friends, my parents, and my kids, that my mom is going to spend all of her time at the salad bar, my kids are going to eat the most expensive steak, my non-red-meat-eating friends are going to focus on the chicken and the salad bar, and I’m going to stay green as long as humanly possible. And you know what? We all pay the same $66.50 for that meal (link to menu in the comments). Many in the industry would say healthcare is too complicated to have simplified pricing. I… disagree. With the appropriate data (which exists), actuaries can help normalize healthcare pricing and create more certainty for patients. As an added benefit, this could reduce the administrative burden related to revenue cycle management. If Fogo can do it, we can do it. Tell me why we can’t (while you slice me another piece of that filet mignon). #healthcare #pricetransparency #actuaries #fogo

Our Food Sector lead, Scott Bowman, wrote this open letter to Walmart featured in Healthcare Dive today. Despite Walmart's plan to close their healthcare clinics next month, Walmart can still be a destination for healthcare needs by focusing on #foodasmedicine. How? Scott proposes three ways: 🔹 creating continuity between pharmacy services and #food programs 🔹 using data to track healthy food access 🔹 maximizing operational scale to accelerate #foodismedicine models. Read the full article here, and let us know if you agree!

Why isn’t FFUPs positioned around health claims? When I was in the early days of looking for a unique CPG concept to launch, I was confounded by a question raised to me in a discovery consumer interview: “does the average snacker actually want products with more health claims?” It got me thinking - in a world where every new product seems to raise the stakes for how healthy it claims to be, is there a set of consumers being left behind? It turns out, there was. We identified the Sofa Snacker - someone who values flavors over health claims, avoids products with too many claims, and snacks most while watching TV shows, movies or sports. Believe it or not, 81% of this population is turned off by brands overtly positioned around health claims…and 82% of them do not believe that healthy snacks taste as good as other snacks. And further - 83% of them were looking for puff flavors beyond cheese! Long story short, we took an interesting insight from qualitative research, validated it with data, and found an interesting way into the market with unique brand positioning.
