With Mental Health Awareness Week fast approaching, Im really tapping into all of the things I can be grateful for 😊 So sat here with my bestie Hugo and a cup of Greggs coffee (Im their biggest fan) Im really thankful to have a job that I now really love and a team who support one another and truly do get along. Home Working days with Hugo are my absolute favourite 🐶and I feel very lucky to have a boss (he hates that word) Dave Humphries who values autonomy and allows the team to manage our schedules in a way that suits our work life balance as well as meets the needs of the business. As a mental health professional in my pre shaping life this stuff is super important to me 🧠 Home working is just one of the ways in which we are able to really step away from that corporate 9-5 office feel that is quickly becoming outdated and burning so many people out 😫 Team breakfasts, drinks after work, spending time getting to know each other and so many of the little things that as a team we truly value, are now a genuine and authentic part of my Shaping Journey. Being heard and valued in a way that meets your needs in your work place is one of the biggest indicators of wellness at work. For anyone out there experiencing burnout or overhwelm in your role, take the time to share how your feeling with your line manager and I promise you they may thank you for it, because they want a happy, healthy and productive team and that all starts with open communication 💙 Next step..... bring your dog to work day 🙏

We've all been there - chasing imaginary awards that don't actually exist, but somehow still feel like they carry weight. 😅 These "Trophies" may not be real, but the pressure to live up to these unrealistic expectations can be all too tangible. In our pursuit of 'Success', it's easy to get caught up in the rat race, burning the candle at both ends and neglecting our own well-being. But here's a gentle reminder: you don't have to 'Live Up to Everyone's Expectations' or 'Work the Longest' to prove your worth. Prioritizing your mental health, setting boundaries, and finding a sustainable work-life balance isn't just okay - it's essential. So, let's ditch the fictional awards and focus on what truly matters: our happiness, our relationships, and our overall well-being. Because at the end of the day, the only award worth striving for is a life well-lived, on your own terms. Let's normalize saying 'no' when we need to, asking for help when we're overwhelmed, and embracing our imperfections – because that's what makes us "Human". 🙂

On Super Bowl Day in 2008 one of my best friends at the time hung himself. My friends and I were in the living room when it happened. The whole story is documented in my book, “SOUL/Life Balance”. Suicide prevention has been close to my hear ever since we lost Jake. In fact, suicide prevention has been close to my heart for nearly my whole life. I wouldn’t ever say I was suicidal. Yet, I did grow up seeing the world as a gray place and there not being any hope and I often wanted to leave this place. It took everything I had to reinvent myself into an optimistic person. Someone who saw the glass half full, rather than the majority of my childhood as just seeing the negative. I’m passionate about the message of SOUL/Life Balance because I believe with every cell of my body that this simple shift from Work/Life Balance has the power to massively shift our collective poor mental well-being. You see, on a subtle and subconscious level by saying “Work/Life Balance” you’re prioritizing work over everything else. When you say “SOUL/Life Balance” you’re reminding yourself that you’re prioritizing your mental health above all else. Because remember if you’re not prioritizing yourself, and feeling the best you can within, how could you ever show up for others? It’s imperative that we find ways to build homeostasis within and I believe the message of SOUL/Life Balance has the power to do just this. 🌿 As Mental Health Awareness Month is in full swing, it's essential to take a moment to reflect on the value of work-life balance, which may sound impossible with so many things going on in the world right now. 🤯 Balancing work and personal well-being is like a tightrope walk, but with the right approach, it becomes an art that fosters our mental health. 🎪 Here are a few tips that have been invaluable in maintaining my work-life harmony: 1️⃣ Prioritize Self-Care: Set aside time for self-care, whether it's a leisurely walk in the park (just like in the picture) or a quiet moment with your furry friend. 🐶 2️⃣ Unplug and Recharge: Disconnect from work-related emails and notifications when your workday ends. Recharging is vital to stay productive and mentally healthy. 3️⃣ Communicate Openly: Transparent communication with your team is key. Let them know when you need time to recharge or when you're dealing with personal challenges. 4️⃣ Seek Support: Reach out to your company's resources for support. We are all human and it’s important that you know you are not going through this alone. 💙 I'm blessed to work for a company with an amazing team that truly understands the importance of work-life balance and encourages a culture of well-being. As we kickstart another week, I want to share some insights that have personally helped me maintain a positive mindset and mental well-being in professional spaces. Here are a few simple yet effective strategies, along with relatable examples, that might resonate with you too: SELF-AWARENESS Taking a moment each day to pause, breathe deeply and affirm to yourself that you are doing great can set a positive tone for the day ahead. For instance, I start my mornings with a quick morning run or walk and a positive affirmation like "Today, I'll tackle challenges with a clear mind and a positive attitude." SELF-CARE BREAKS Incorporating short breaks throughout the day is crucial. These breaks allow you to recharge, refocus and come back to tasks with renewed energy. For example, I take a 5-minute break every hour to stand up, stretch and take a few deep breaths. SEEKING SUPPORT It's important to remember that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Don't hesitate to reach out to colleagues, supervisors or support networks if you need assistance or if taking a mental health day would benefit you. Recently, I reached out to a coworker for advice on managing work stress and their insights were really helpful. CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENTS Every accomplishment, no matter how small, deserves recognition. Take time to celebrate your achievements, whether it's completing a task ahead of schedule, receiving positive feedback or mastering a new skill. Last week, I treated myself to a favorite snack after completing a challenging project milestone. CREATING A POSITIVE WORKSPACE Your environment plays a significant role in your mood and productivity. Personalize your workspace with elements that inspire you such as motivational quotes, a favorite plant or calming music. In my case, I have a small desk plant that adds a touch of nature to my workspace and helps me feel more relaxed and focused. CONNECTING AND BONDING Building strong relationships with colleagues is not only beneficial for work but also for your mental health. Take the opportunity to connect with your team members, share stories about your weekends and create a supportive and connected work culture. Last Friday, our team had a virtual "watercooler chat" where we shared funny stories and bonded over common interests. By incorporating these practical tips into your routine and adapting them to your preferences, you can navigate the week ahead with a focus on mental well-being and positivity. Remember, taking care of your mental health is an essential part of being productive and successful in the long term. Here's to a productive and fulfilling week ahead!

Is work greater than life? As a human being and also as a mental health professional, this question baffles me quite a lot. Because generally most if not all will say Life is greater and work is just an aspect, but are we really able to make this segregation? We're spending most of our times in our workplace nowadays. The environment we work in and the people we work with have an immense impact on our mental health and wellbeing. Companies need to realise that people aren't machines, they have feelings and emotions, they have a body to take care of and family and friends to spend time with. Working for ridiculously long hours with immense workload will make people vulnerable, sooner or later. When I see family, friends, loved ones working day and night, staring at their laptops, tired and frustrated, yet not able to sleep or take a break because they've a deadline waiting for them, it scares me. To anyone who's reading this, please take care of yourself. Try to strive a healthy work life balance (even if the deadline is right around the corner, take a nap) and when it gets too much, take a break, relax, rethink and restart your journey. Because at the end work is just an aspect of life. 💫

"Yo, 60-hour weeks are no longer cool" 😒 I hear and read statements like this very often these days and I have to say, they annoy me. 🤨 Why is that? I like working a lot! This sentence doesn't come off my fingers as easily as it should. 📝 I love the feeling of accomplishing something at work, helping out colleagues, learning something new, overcoming obstacles. And I know that in order to do so, I need to sacrifice time and energy! However, more and more often, I have the feeling that, within the context of the (absolutely important and healthy!) discussion about "work-life balance" 💼🏠, another, quite toxic counter-movement has developed: Work Shaming! 🤯 The militant "mindfulness" mob has social media in its grip and attacks, sometimes subtly, sometimes less so, people who publicly talk about their love for their workplace and their work. 👎 I call them "healthaholics", and while I take extreme care of my mental as well as physical health, I do believe it is absolutely possible to combine these two "passions". In fact, I think it's imperative: For most people, work represents the majority of their waking life! So I think that NOT putting in proper effort and NOT loving your job makes you unhealthy! 🤒 Nowadays, thanks to the shortage of skilled workers, it's no problem to find another job if your current one isn't fulfilling. 🔄 With this post, I'm deliberately poking the beehive. 🐝 What do you think? 🧐 Is the work-life balance trend turning into work-shaming?
