Today is Juneteenth, and we are taking this opportunity as a time for reflection, education, and unity as we celebrate the end of slavery in the United States. We are also taking the time today to recognize all that Black and African American HR professionals do and celebrate their contributions to our industry. While the industry as a whole works hard to foster diverse and inclusive workplaces, we would love to see an increase in Black representation in HR leadership, as currently, only 7.7%* of HR leaders identify as Black. The more diverse leadership is, the more inclusive a business will be. Professional organizations, such as the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources (NAAAHR), are working to provide Black and African American HR professionals with job opportunities and support. The celebration of Black History month presents an opportunity to pay tribute to the profound legacy of people of the African diaspora. It is a reminder that our multifaceted history holds deep value and significance in shaping where we are today and where we are headed in the future. Engaging in impactful conversations, visiting immersive cultural displays or thought-provoking performances that highlight the resilience, ingenuity and vast contributions of the black community throughout time serves as a powerful reminder that we must continue to work towards a more inclusive society. So I received this news a couple of weeks ago from Black Mentorship Inc. who I have supported through mentoring over the last several years. A wonderful recognition - highlighting one of my personal pillars - mentorship in our community. One of the best ways to build inclusion, equity and opportunity across every industry is through mentorship. Lifting up the next generation of professionals, leaders, and entrepreneurs within our community starts with equipping them with the skills and confidence they need to propel their careers forward. At the heart of mentoring within our communities is building relationships that encourage self-advocacy and boosts confidence. Mentoring connects mentees to opportunities, resources, and people that can help them develop their existing skills and increase their visibility in a positive manner. Mentoring does not make inequitable systems equitable, but it can increase access to important relationships, experiences, and opportunities that can help these individuals rise and thrive. But the trick is to showcase their work externally to show your firm’s culture and commitment to diversity - so let me tell you who is doing it well! 🍬 Talking about what you do Thinking deeply about the messaging to your members, the wider business and externally is something that is key. They are constantly focusing on comms, which communicates the activities of the ERG which resonates with so many. Actions are seen. Appreciation to staff is given. And showing your industry as a desirable place to work for diverse talent is your responsibility too, not just the networks!

I can't begin to tell you how proud I am to work for this organization. When I took the on-boarding training, there were several diversity and bias segments that were so well done & unlike any training I'd ever seen before in such a large organization. Never before had I witnessed such mindful and thoughtful training with interactive sessions to help me question my biases and teach me better communication and questioning skills. Not only does New York Life take care of its clients and policyowners, but it takes care of the people who care for them, too.
