Located in the heart of Parkdale, 11 Brock Avenue is designed as a sanctuary for those at risk of or experiencing homelessness. In collaboration with the City of Toronto and PARC (Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre), this project will offer 42 new rent-geared-to-income and supportive homes, fostering community connections and promoting well-being. PARC, a dedicated community organization, will manage the building, ensuring it remains a place of refuge and support for the Parkdale community. Set to complete in 2025, this development prioritizes sustainability with zero carbon emissions and low-carbon construction. #Parkdale #AffordableHousing #Toronto https://lnkd.in/gVeChTwP

I appreciate knowing the Bellows Falls story. Three focus areas areas are spot on complementary strategies.
North or south on Route 5? In Bellows Falls, Vermont, the answer is both! For years, a crumbling concrete building marked the town's entrance, turning visitors away. But thanks to Windham & Windsor Housing Trust, that's changed. The new Bellows Falls Garage houses 27 affordable apartments with "million-dollar views," and it's just the beginning. ✨ ▪️Comprehensive community development: They didn't just build housing, they revitalized the whole town. ️ ▪️Honoring history: The project incorporated the Elnu Abenaki tribe's connection to the land, including a land acknowledgment and indigenous art. 🪶 ▪️Investing in locals: They helped restore Victorian homes and awarded grants for improvements. The result? A thriving community with a renewed sense of pride. Want to learn more? I think combining services with people that need said services is extremely important. Mixed use areas can be of benefit as multiple groups of people can utilize the space and get access to services they may not normally have access to. Affordable housing has been a popular topic as of late. I think it is important for people to be able to afford their housing as well as other necessities of life. It is crucial that people have services that help them maintain housing and prevent homelessness.
#MercyHousingNorthwest community Gardner House and the Allen Family Center in #Seattle is just one example of fusing of services and housing and can be the key in getting more #AffordableHousing built. Fast Company talks with Colin Morgan-Cross about the successes of creating a home for services for residents and the community at large.

There are many "old" housing models that could be explored today, including rooming, multi-purpose rooms (think: Murphy Bed), Levittown/s, and much more. "New" housing models include combinations of greenfields, brownfields, housing "printers," and many more. Yet, much of our drive for housing is still driven by the infrastructure support/demand (think: credit score, cash, etc) for "Leave it to Beaver" white-picket-fence homes....we need to re-think this as a systems approach to make it sustainable.... https://lnkd.in/g3-PnvME

How do you think ownership affects the quality of your neighborhood? If most residents do not own their homes, does that make their commitment to to the place and people less? Does it increase resident instability? Decrease the likelihood that local institutions and networks will be built and a sense of community emerge? What is your neighborhood like? The initiative by the City of North Vancouver to promote healthier and more social multi-unit housing designs is a commendable step towards creating communities that thrive on mutual support and connection. This concept resonates deeply with successful models observed in countries like Switzerland, where cohousing has long been a part of the cultural fabric. In Switzerland, projects such as the "Mehr als Wohnen" development in Zurich exemplify how intentional design can foster community interaction, sustainability, and a shared sense of belonging. These housing projects are not just about creating physical spaces but about cultivating environments that encourage residents to come together, share experiences, and support one another. Embedding social connection into our living environments is a powerful tool for enhancing community resilience and individual happiness. It's an approach that goes beyond the physical design of buildings to touch on the very essence of what it means to live in a community. As we learn from examples around the globe, it becomes clear that such models are not only feasible but essential for the future of urban living. Adapting these principles can significantly contribute to our mission of creating happier, healthier, and more inclusive communities. It is about reimagining our spaces to be more than just places to live, but places where life, in its fullest sense, happens.
Can we build more resilient, happy communities by embedding social connection and mutual support into the buildings we live in? Cohousing—and other community-oriented housing models—suggest that the answer is yes. Our latest newsletter dives into how the City of North Vancouver has become a leader in encouraging more healthy and social multi-unit housing designs: https://lnkd.in/e23hHTBA P.s. Over the past 14 years, towns and cities across England have been suffering from austerity measures and in need of regeneration that prioritises socio-economic development 🏙️ Since 2010, Warrington Borough Council has had a reduction of more than £68 million in revenue support grant funding from the government. This is a staggering 97% decrease which has inevitably impacted the local community. Our regeneration of Warrington shopping centre aims to remedy the impact of austerity measures and align with the Greater Cockhedge Master Plan, fostering economic growth and community development. The project aims on breathing new life into the retail destination by downsizing yet enhancing the commercial offering, improving mall entrances and creating quality public realm to revitalise the aesthetic appearance. Downsizing Cockhedge will also result in the provision of up to 900 high density residential units in this town centre sustainable location. Principle 2: A range of housing types to suit all. Many respondents to our visioning engagement emphasised the importance of creating an inclusive neighbourhood for all, which is why we intend to deliver a diverse range of housing types and tenures to ensure we cater to the needs of various age groups, lifestyles and family sizes. Our plans include a mix of sustainable townhouses and apartments, in a range of sizes and configurations, which will help to accommodate the evolving needs of residents over time. We also intend to provide opportunities for young people and families to get on the housing ladder through shared ownership structures. #CityVillage #BradfordCityVillage #BFDCityVillage #ECF #TheEnglishCitiesFund #Bradford #WestYorkshire #BradfordDistrict #BradfordCouncil #Bradford2025 #BradfordCityofCulture #VisitBradford #Sustainability
