Cass Materials, with its innovative bio-based foams for sustainable packaging, is part of BioInnovation's "fast track" Hypothesis testing step 1. The project will show that Cass’ foams, using the cellulose fibre reject from the Domsjö Fabriker AB pulp mill, are a sustainable alternative to fossil-based packaging materials. A sparkling dilemma... Littering our homes, clinging to our clothes, and showing up in the most unexpected places, glitter has earned a reputation for being both enchanting and infuriating. But beyond its annoyance lies a more significant concern—glitter's widespread presence, not just in our living spaces but also in the farthest corners of our planet. Most glitter is made from a combination of aluminum and plastic, rendering it a microplastic. Unlike other microplastics that result from the breakdown of larger plastic items over time, glitter comes in its environmentally hazardous form right from the start, meant purely for our enjoyment. However, a positive change is on the horizon as retailers like Morrisons, Waitrose, and John Lewis in the UK have taken a stand against glitter in recent years, pledging to remove it from their store-brand Christmas products. The search for sustainable alternatives to conventional glitter has led some manufacturers to delve into developing eco-friendly versions of this glimmering substance. A notable breakthrough has come from the University of Saskatchewan, where researchers have unveiled a biodegradable glitter innovation named ChiralGlitter. This groundbreaking product is plant-based, derived from a substance found in plant cell walls. It harnesses the natural process of producing structural colours, resulting in sparkles like no other. Apart from its dazzling appearance, ChiralGlitter's most significant advantage is its biodegradability—unlike traditional glitter that lingers in the environment for centuries, this eco-friendly option breaks down naturally, mitigating plastic pollution and reducing its impact on the Earth. With glitter being a popular element in packaging, cosmetics, and various other products, the demand for sustainable alternatives is growing rapidly. The University of Cambridge and other institutions have also joined the quest for biodegradable solutions. But they do caution one problem can't fixed—it will still scatter around your home and be as annoying to parents as it's ever been. Initially, we thought that it would just be a rheology modifier to replace fossil fuel derived carbomers, but it is so much more! I mentioned the binding capabilities in video 3, and whats more it can also act as an emulsifier. So you have one green, biodegradable, futureproof product that could mean you leave out many that are harmful to the planet! It is even easier to use than a lot of these products. What it does take is a commitment to build your formulations using Algumer as a base and finding out what you don't actually need. I visited Boreal Bioproducts to get my hands on some of the extractions their team is pulling out of the lumber sector. Based in #Espoo, Finland 🇫🇮, they use a chemical free, hot water pressurization process to capture valuable sugars for use with food, cosmetics, coatings, and even glue. Jaakko Pajunen, managing director, brought me through the research lab to see the R&D in action! On the tour, I met Alexander Henn, their lignin technology expert, filling up a beaker with resins from the latest experiment. He's continuing to refine the next generation of extracts that will continue to make their products stand out as sustainable alternatives to synthetic fibers and resins. ClimatePoint takes inspiration from solutions like these to connect founders with corporations facing environmental challenges and emission reduction targets.
