Yesterday the Western Gateway in partnership with RIA Wales & Western hosted an event to bring together rail leaders to discuss a way forward towards a regional approach to rail in this great region (which has expanded eastwards this year - 👏) Many thanks to Arup for sponsoring and James Cooke for chairing and stimulating debate and discussion on the various panels and in the audience. Many cool topics were discussed but two things stood out: 1. Procurement of rail Infrastructure projects is changing due to a changing political landscape - Mark Barry . With fiscal devolution the case for in estment needs to be made regionally in how it fits I to place shaping and how this benefits UK Plc. The days of procuring rail as a transaction appear to be over. 2. It's great to see female representation at this rail event. Not just females in industry, but females in positions of influence and decision making. The industry has come a long way since I joined in it 2007 (yikes that was a looooong time ago).

🗣️ ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION - MEMBERS & SPECIAL GUESTS 🗣️ As part of an 'Insight to Rail' day, we were proud to facilitate a dynamic roundtable hosted by DB ESG at their Derby headquarters. This gathering brought together a range of #RFmembers to discuss the future of UK rail with two newly elected Labour MPs - Baggy Shanker of Derby South, and Catherine Atkinson of Derby North. Key topics included: 🟣Barriers to Innovation 🟣Collaboration Across the Rail Ecosystem 🟣Sustainability and Future-Proofing, Including Skills Pipeline 🟣Priorities for the Transition to Great British Railways The roundtable featured contributions from a range of #RFmembers, including Angel Trains, DB ESG, Encompass Engineering, Sperry Rail Inc., Mott MacDonald, Railston & Co Ltd, Tidyco Ltd, Tracsis PLC, TrainFX Ltd and Structural Fabrications . The discussion underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic planning in navigating the challenges and opportunities facing the rail industry today. Really good discussion on DEIB at the TransCityRail South today.

Who will walk in our shoes? - Tuesday saw the release of the draft Rail Reform Bill, that rare thing, a piece of legislation that is pretty much universally welcomed by the industry it relates to. There is still a very long way to travel and a lot of detail behind the drafting to be discussed but at last it feels like we are underway. It is 30 years since we last had an integrated railway and now is exactly the time to think ahead and ask ourselves not what we need but who we need to make a success of the railway in 10 and 20 year’s time. We are entering a future where to work in the railway will mean being part of a FTSE 50 scale enterprise that will offer a variety of opportunities that no industry other than Defence can equal. I can’t help but wonder how we ensure that those opportunities are understood and that as an industry we create the breadth of pathways that allow us to exploit the future talent that could come into the railway. At WSP in the UK we are exploring those pathways as an active member of the 5% club but I wonder what other ideas are out there to ensure we nurture the people that we are going to need to make the most of the reintegrated railway’s future? #railinfrastructure #economicgrowth #netzerofuture
