Webinar Alert WEDNESDAY, April 17, 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM The Role of Riparian Buffers in Watersheds and in your Local Landscape Juliana Barrett & Chet Arnold In this presentation we will explore what riparian buffers are and why they are a critical component of both our coastal and inland communities. Riparian buffers play a critical role in water quality and watershed protection, provide wildlife habitat, and assist with climate resilience. Because of the transitional nature of riparian buffers (wet to dry), these areas allow for a variety of non-traditional landscaping choices and designs that still allow for water access and water viewsheds. We were at the #NatureClimateDebate tonight at Chester Zoo. Recognition by politicians of the nature and climate emergency is important, but it’s the detailed policies that will decide whether we meet our legal targets.    The UK is one of the most nature-depleted places in the world and our wildlife is in freefall. We know that this #GeneralElection is a crucial one for nature: we have less than six years to go until 2030, when we need to meet our crucial domestic and international targets to tackle nature’s decline.     We can’t address the climate crisis without solving the nature crisis, and vice versa. Nature itself holds many of the solutions and there's so much evidence that proves conservation works - from protecting ancient woodlands, to restoring our peatlands, saltmarshes and seagrass beds and beyond.      Beccy Speight responds live from the event with her reflections, and why all parties need to understand the urgency of the nature crisis. ❗️The Time to Act is Now❗️ We're making real strides toward building wildfire and water resilience in Sierra Nevada forests and watersheds, but State budget cuts severely threaten this progress. We need a stable funding source for local conservation and restoration projects! A recent Federal Climate Financial Report shows that over the last decade, wildfire suppression has cost the USFS and the Department of the Interior an average of more than $3 billion per year. Anticipated increased fire suppression costs due to climate change bring additional urgency to the need to invest in wildfire resilience projects and efforts to protect communities ahead of extreme climate events. We need State investments in restoration and land management programs that: 🌳Protect our health, environment, and way of life 🏔️Preserve irreplaceable landscapes ✨ Maintain California's climate leadership 🔥 Avoid catastrophic impacts due to megafires Please help us urge our State leaders to keep the momentum going! Big win for #conservation to finally be considered as a land use on par with other land uses, no longer "less than." We're finally codifying that our earth has value in simply existing; not just in what we can extract from it or build on top of it. New performance audit report: Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Recovery Program Why did we do this audit? * The 2019–20 bushfire season impacted many threatened species and ecological communities. As part of the response, the Australian Government committed $200 million to assist native wildlife and habitats recover from the impacts of the bushfires. * This audit provides assurance to Parliament over the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water’s (DCCEEW) design and implementation of the Wildlife and Habitat Bushfire Recovery Program.
