Why does intersectionality matter when it relates to supporting Black LGBTQ+ young people? 🌈 When we don’t take into account the intersectionality that this community experiences on a day-to-day basis, we neglect a major facet of providing adequate support and resources. Our guide outlines that Black LGBTQ+ young people are not inherently prone to suicide risk because of their race, sexual orientation, or gender identity, but rather, they are placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. This could be because of several reasons, including but not limited to: 📢Current events 📢Being exposed to Anti-Black & Anti-LGBTQ+ Rhetoric 📢Compounded grief over time 📢Direct or indirect experience of Anti-Black Violence All of this being said, supporting Black LGBTQ+ young people is crucial to ensuring a world where they can thrive and not just survive. Intersectionality is beautiful and deserves to be acknowledged, celebrated, and considered when providing life-saving resources and mental health support.🧡 If you or someone you know could use tips on how to support Black LGBTQ+ young people, check out the full guide here: https://bit.ly/3BZAovI #BIPOCMHAM #LGBTQ #Intersectionality #TheTrevorProject

"We have to be in the room where decisions that impact us are occurring. There are many tables and there is room at those tables for more of us." June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month! To celebrate, we're highlighting some LGBTQ+ trailblazers in our community. Today, we're proud to feature Justice G.Helen Whitener, of the Washington State Supreme Court. Read more about her inspiring journey at https://lnkd.in/eyqnXgiH but enjoy one excerpt here: Q: How often do you encounter other LGBTQ+ attorneys, particularly those of color, in the appellate field? Why do you think that representation is important? A: Occasionally, but it is rare. Representation helps build trust and confidence in the legal field as well as in the judiciary. It moves us from viewing laws and situations in a monolithic way. This is the reason I mentor as much as I do. I ask one thing of all of my mentees, and that is please find someone to mentor, share the opportunities that you receive. We have to be in the room where decisions that impact us are occurring. There are many tables and there is room at those tables for more of us. I can’t sit at all of the tables, but together we can cover more than I ever could alone. When we become gatekeepers, it is imperative that we be “intentional gatekeepers” and offer opportunities within our spheres of influence to others and the experiences necessary to help them advance to the next level. #PRIDE #RepresentationMatters #LGBTQ

91% of non-LGBTQ Americans agree that LGBTQ people should have the freedom to live their life and not be discriminated against. So, why are we still fighting for equity and justice for the LGBTQ community? According to a 2023 study by GLAAD, 55% of non-LGBTQ Americans do not understand the dimensions of the LGBTQ community or how to describe individuals within it, and 66% believe the false claim that the LGBTQ community is one group with similar needs and issues. 👉 On June 26, we're exploring this disconnect and what you can do this Pride Month — and throughout the year — to support deeper understanding and intersectional allyship: https://lnkd.in/eDUhqr7J Join us and our panel of experts, who you can learn more about below, in a virtual session titled "Pride for Past, Present, and the Future" on June 26, 2-3:30pm ET. Registration for this Virtual Learning Lab is free with the option to make a contribution to support our panel. If you can’t attend at that time, a recording will be sent to those who register. "I think it is critical that people who would otherwise be left outside of this field have not only representation but support as they consider whether this work is for them." For our last PRIDE month profile, we proudly share this feature of TAP mentor Emanuel Powell III, a litigation associate at Jenner & Block LLP. Click over to our website (https://lnkd.in/esmr8f9k) to read his full profile, including how his community's support for each other growing up shaped his commitment to social justice, but for now, read one excerpt here: Q: How often do you encounter other LGBTQ+ attorneys, particularly those of color, in the appellate field? Why do you think that representation is important? A: I have been lucky to work for judges and organizations that have been committed to working with talent from diverse backgrounds. I am also at a law firm where several leaders are openly members of the LGBTQ+ community. Even so, the reality has been that I am often the only Black attorney in many spaces, especially when it comes to the appellate bar. I decided to become a TAP mentor primarily for this reason, because I think it is critical that people who would otherwise be left outside of this field have not only representation but support as they consider whether this work is for them. #LGBTQ #Pride #AppellateLinkedIn

Given its Pride month in many jurisdictions, I was delighted to once again be asked to write for theHRDIRECTOR, this time on practical steps organisations can take to support their LGBTQ+ communities. I was even more delighted to be able to ask Chris Salusbury, who led our relevant ERG at GBG to co-write with me. Read the full article through the link (p.46-47), but in summary; - be data driven in your planning and communication - work with those affected to define how you can help - ensure Allies (esp. Executives) shoulder responsibility, and not expect their LGBTQ+ team mates to own it, or have the energy to beat the drum alone - take reasonable steps which are impactful enough, but can form a 365 commitment and not a once a year activity For this and other LGBTQ focussed content, see https://lnkd.in/eG5ZiD5N For my full interview on, amongst other things, the importance of focus on D&I, see the August 2023 edition. #LGBTQ #pride #ERGs #diversity #DEI

The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law recently released an enlightening report on "Positive Attitudes Toward LGBTQ People in Mainland China." The findings reveal a significant shift in societal perspectives, showing that more than half of the respondents believe LGBTQ individuals should be accepted by society. This marks a crucial step toward greater inclusion and equality. Support for LGBTQ rights is overwhelmingly strong in several key areas. An impressive 68% of participants insist that schools must protect LGBTQ students from bullying and violence, while 62% demand fair treatment in the workplace. Furthermore, a majority of 52% champion marriage equality, affirming that same-sex couples should have the right to marry, and 48% assert that same-sex couples are capable parents. Additionally, half of the respondents strongly back companies promoting LGBTQ acceptance, and 45% are comfortable with LGBTQ content in the media. These positive attitudes are especially pronounced among younger, more educated, and urban populations. Knowing an LGBTQ person personally is also a strong predictor of greater acceptance. While challenges remain, these findings highlight encouraging progress toward a more inclusive society for all. #LGBTQ #Inclusion #Diversity #China #Equality

a.k.a. "The Gay Leadership Dude®" | Award-winning & Best-Selling Author | Keynote Speaker | Helping Leaders at All Levels Be More Consciously Inclusive
THIS WEEK ON "YOUR QUEER CAREER®" ... my weekly newsletter on LinkedIn focused on empowering LGBTQ+ (& Ally) professionals. Vol 3. This week’s question: Happy Pride Month, Gay Leadership Dude® … I’m not a member of the LBGTQIA Community, but I try to be a good ally. While I’m kind of floundering on how best to support my gay friends and coworkers, do you have any advice on how to be a better ally for my queer friends? ~ Rainbow Ally My 2¢ : Here are five common strategies you can leverage to be more effective, and take some of the burden of being an ally off the group your striving to help: 1. Start with self-education before burdening marginalized communities with explanations. 2. To be a supportive ally, practice active listening by engaging with intent and compassion. 3. Don’t engage in performative allyship. 4. Support marginalized friends by speaking out against discrimination, defending their rights, and amplifying their voices. 5. Being a great ally involves embracing discomfort, acknowledging mistakes, and learning from them to support marginalized communities effectively. WHAT DO YOU THINK? To stay connected, you can subscribe through the link below. And help me break the 4,000 subscriber mark? How to be a Pride ally? Being a Pride ally in day-to-day life involves: 1. **Listening**: Pay attention to and respect LGBTQ+ people's experiences. 2. **Using Inclusive Language**: Use correct pronouns and avoid assumptions about someone's gender or sexuality. 3. **Supporting Equality**: Stand up against discrimination and speak out if you witness homophobia or transphobia. 4. **Educating Yourself**: Learn about LGBTQ+ history and issues. 5. **Being Visible**: Display symbols of support, like wearing a rainbow pin or displaying a Pride flag. 6. **Creating Safe Spaces**: Ensure your home, workplace, and social circles are welcoming to LGBTQ+ people. 7. **Advocating**: Support policies and initiatives that promote LGBTQ+ rights. 8. **Being Respectful**: Treat everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their gender or sexuality. #lgbtqia #pridemonth #pride #ally #lesbians, #gays #transgenders #loveislove #prideally Anisha Gothorp

I've had the privilege of meeting many inspiring LGBTQ+ business leaders over the past few months. However, I've noticed a common theme in our conversations. Many of these leaders express feeling like they're on the outside, not part of the traditional straight, white male networks. But when I ask how they leverage their own LGBTQ+ network, I often get silence. Digging deeper, it becomes clear that they actually have a strong queer network, but they're not tapping into it enough for business purposes. Not to mention that they are working on actively expanding and utilizing their LGBTQ+ network. It's time to stop lamenting about not being part of certain networks and start utilizing the power of our own LGBTQ+ business networks. They're stronger than we realize. Let's make the most of our connections and support each other in our professional endeavors. #LGBTQ+ #BusinessNetworking #SupportEachOther #LGBTQLeaders #LGBTQEntrepreneurs #IdentityVentures
