🌿 🔎 Montado Living Lab Approved as a Member of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) The Montado Living Lab has now joined the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) following the recent approval of its application. This approval as a member of ENoLL serves primarily as a certification, as an international quality seal. The Montado Living Lab for the regeneration of the agro-silvo-pastoral Montado system is a CHANGE – Global Changes as Sustainability Institute project that integrates, in addition to the research units that integrate the Associated Laboratory (MED - Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, CE3C, and CENSE - Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research), a group of about 40 stakeholders, which includes various actors: producer and local development associations, public administration entities, companies linked to the Montado system, and owners or managers of Montado areas. The primary objective of the Montado Living Lab is the co-creation, testing, and implementation of solutions that allow the preservation and regeneration of the Montado, its ecosystems, and associated ecosystem services, using for this purpose several Montado plots distributed in the Alentejo region. The European Network of Living Labs ENoLL (European Network of Living Labs) is an international, non-profit, and independent association of reference Living Labs. ENoLL facilitates the sharing of knowledge, joint actions, and partnerships in projects among its more than 480 members in Europe and worldwide. The Association's objective is to promote the concept of Living Labs to influence European policies, promote Living Labs, and enable their implementation on a global level. We believe the role of re-granters can extend beyond monetary grants by emphasizing relationship-building, capacity-building, and amplifying marginalized stakeholders. By challenging traditional philanthropic norms and addressing funding inequities, we must strive to expand access to resources, support emergent movements, and navigate positional power dynamics. Ultimately, we envision a transformative shift in philanthropy, one that prioritizes movement-led initiatives and dismantles existing structures of oppression, envisioning a future where communities thrive with the resources and support they truly deserve.  Over 2023-2026, we aim to drive $2.25 million to these frontline organizations. At the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), the Hoare family uses a philanthropic profiling tool called Care4Most (www.care4most.org) to establish which causes mean the most to family members. Recently, the GBT’s focus on environmental projects intensified, with the funding target rising from 11% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. To maximise its impact, the GBT partnered with Impatience Earth to develop an 'ecosystem granting' strategy. This approach uses multiple smaller grants to address the interconnected nature of environmental issues, supporting solutions from the planting and preservation of seagrass to regenerative agriculture. We need to play the long game. Yes, it is important to address current needs, sometimes urgent too. But we must also keep an eye and take action towards the root causes of issues, those that can sometimes only be identified by planning for the next 10, 15 or 30 years. Futures thinking is a great way to explore that, and it's about time organizations consider it an essential tool to create long-lasting social change.

The potential for positive change and lasting impact is vast. #Philanthropy serves as a crucial catalyst, but its effectiveness hinges on informed action. The intricate connections between planetary and oceanic degradation demand a nuanced approach. For instance, even zero-emissions container ships can unwittingly spread invasive species, while sailing yachts may inadvertently damage carbon-capturing seagrass with their anchors. Moreover, #recycling plastics, though well-intentioned, can yield significant #carbonemissions. Therefore, the most successful philanthropists are those who possess both knowledge and generosity. By collaborating with carefully selected experts, they navigate these complexities to drive meaningful change.
