📝Ingredient Check # 2 What is 🍋Bergamot? And its role in Perfumery? 🍋Bergamot is a citrus fruit that is primarily cultivated in Italy. It is known for its distinctive, sweet, and citrusy fragrance with subtle floral and spicy undertones. In perfumery, bergamot essential oil, which is extracted from the outer skin of the fruit, is highly valued for its fragrant properties. The fruit looks more like a lemon or lime than an orange and has a very distinct scent. 🍋Bergamot essential oil plays a crucial role in perfumery as it serves as a top note, which means it is one of the first scents perceived when a perfume is applied. 🍋Its fresh and lively aroma adds a bright, uplifting quality to fragrances and is often used to enhance the opening of a perfume composition. Additionally, bergamot is commonly used in both men's and women's fragrances, making it a versatile and widely-appreciated ingredient in the perfume industry. Here are some classic examples of perfumes that prominently feature 🍋bergamot as a key note: 1. Chanel No. 5: This iconic fragrance, created by perfumer Ernest Beaux, features bergamot as a top note, contributing to its fresh and vibrant opening. 2. Dior Eau Sauvage: This popular men's fragrance is built around the sparkling freshness of bergamot, lending a sophisticated character to the scent. 4. Tom Ford Neroli Portofino: Known for its luxurious composition, this fragrance features bergamot as a prominent and uplifting note, complemented by floral and aromatic accords. 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐔𝐌𝐄𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍 𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒? (𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟑) "𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐕𝐀𝐈𝐋𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐑 𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄" You can check here for my previous post on this topic, https://lnkd.in/dFyCgVZp For ages, perfume has always been linked with luxury, something that's seen as special and expensive. Just like other fancy things, the more exclusive the perfume, the more expensive. When it comes to how exclusive they are, perfumes generally fall into two categories: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞. 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬 are crafted by renowned fashion houses like Dior, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, etc. These houses, recognized for their excellence in fashion and luxury, also offer a range of products including clothing and watches. Interestingly, the fragrances offered by these renowned houses are often among their most affordable and accessible offerings, serving as entry points to their prestigious brands. In other words, designer perfumes are readily accessible, and mass produced. And as we already know, increased supply often leads to lower prices. For perfume enthusiasts, widespread availability of a fragrance increases the likelihood of encountering someone else wearing the same scent, which may not be appealing to everyone. Introducing 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬. Niche perfume houses prioritize the creation of unique, exclusive and limited perfumes, only. These houses often have a distinct identity that resonates with their followers, whether it's a commitment to exceptional quality standards or a preference for specific fragrance notes. Several niche perfume houses are characterized by their small size and adherence to traditional practices, maintaining a heritage steeped in prestige and devotion to the craft of perfumery. Take, for instance, the renowned Creed perfume house, which boasts a legacy dating back almost three centuries, serving royalty like Queen Victoria. Their perfumery techniques have been meticulously passed down from one generation to another over eight generations. They have remained steadfast in preserving the time-honored tradition of hand-weighing, mixing, and filtering all components, just as they were centuries ago. Whether out of choice or necessity, these fragrance houses limit the number of bottles of fragrances they produce. Coupled with the cult followings these houses enjoy, prices can at least double or even triple the prices of high-end designer fragrances. Do you have a favorite Designer or Niche Perfume? Please share in the comment section My next post in this series will be on 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 of perfumes. #XavierLaurent #PerfumeDeodorant #Perfume #JosienHoldingsLimited

The dividing line between dupes and counterfeits is thin. While the former (legally) mimics the real thing, the latter (illegally) passes itself off as the real thing. Whether the consumer appreciates the difference is often unclear, but many Gen Z consumers are enthusiastic about dupes, not least for their affordability — a trend observed by the luxury sector through gritted teeth, fragrances have become the market's next target. Why are high-quality, unique perfumes becoming so expensive, some may ask? But what’s more important to consider is why so many people end up wearing the same perfumes. Even niche fragrances are at risk of becoming mainstream. Take the amazing Baccarat Rouge phenomenon by Francis Kurkdjian (RRP £220 for 35ml). Over time, these exquisite, high-priced fragrances become commonplace and highly recognisable, diminishing their niche appeal as more people wear them. Instead, the new standard of luxury is about offering a completely unique olfactory experience to every customer – as true luxury isn’t about the price tag but about crafting a unique, personal olfactory identity that is theirs alone. https://lnkd.in/dTN4zFJA #Fragrance #LuxuryPerfumery #NichePerfume

Standardizing the luxury? No, thank you. Recent concerning trend in the #perfume world: the emergence of minimalist, standardized collections. Is this really the best direction for the industry? I've always viewed the fragrance sector as a ‘sacred land’ of wild creativity and fantasy, especially in packaging. #Fragrance is unique in that it sells branded emotions and intangible stories, with customers paying a premium for these experiences. Additionally, the low cost of raw ingredients in fragrances, similar to the spirits sector, allows for investment in unique #packaging and #marketing. In short, I always thought perfume sector is a perfect environment for stunning, fine art quality designs to emerge. Sadly, I'm starting to question my perspective as trends shift. More and more brands are now releasing standardizes collections, typically offering a range of fragrances to appeal to diverse preferences. But how do you market a collection that includes both dark, gloomy scents and light, floral ones? This push for inclusivity often leads to a 'minimalist', one-size-fits-all packaging approach. It's so generic sometimes that it’s hard to tell the difference between collections like Dior Privée and YSL Le Vestiaire des Parfums. Is there any data showing that these standardized series perform better in sales? Do brands expect their loyal customers to collect all the products from a series? ◾ On one hand, being part of a commercial series might diminish the perceived prestige of individual fragrances, as they often don't get enough individual promotion to establish their unique value. The focus seems to be more on promoting the collection as a whole. ◾On the other hand, brands like TOM FORD and Maison Margiela have built their fragrance portfolios around a few packaging models and have been very successful. The key difference is that these brands have used this approach from the start, forming their legacy in this way. They also advertise their products as distinct items, despite design similarities. The real issue is the shift from uniqueness to #standardization without adjusting marketing strategies and failing to educate customers about these changes. This transition results in the loss of eye-catching designs and compelling stories, leaving consumers unclear about what they are gaining in return. What exactly are we getting from this new trend? 🤔 PS Minimalism and stock-like laziness are two different things. Some of the standardized bottles presented below look good and are on-brand, but this is not the point.
