BIG, BIG conversation about the capacity for change and the need to define what we in CRE and government must do now and in the future. This is a great listen.

The best way to face the often overwhelming task in hand when it comes to decarbonising the built world? Work out the difference between urgent and important. That is how Smith Mordak is handling the pressure of heading up the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) at a time of great, well, urgency. Easy to say, not to easy to do. Not least in the run up to an election where we will (in their own words) “probably be electing the last government that is going to have the power to do anything significant in a reasonable timeframe.” To find out how they work out where to direct their focus at a time when everything feels time sensitive, check out the full interview below. It is worth it just to hear their thoughts on what being a game changer means to them. One of the most intriguing, interesting answers I have ever heard. And if you want to see Smith speaking live alongside the equally brilliant Jacob Loftus and Kat Hanna on the Meet the Gamechangers panel at CREtech London on May 8th, you can register here https://rb.gy/zqolnl. Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) helps make our communities healthy, walkable, and better prepared for climate challenges. But, without a standardised approach, businesses have been implementing varying policies with varying results. That's where the National Urban Green Infrastructure Handbook comes in. It’s been designed to equip developers with tools to integrate UGI, facilitate a national standard and strengthen UGI’s co-benefits. The handbook can benefit: 🌳 urban professionals 🌳 policy makers 🌳 UGI Grant applicants 🌳 land and asset owners 🌳 investors. Hear from landscape architect and sustainability strategist David Martin, who played a big role in creating the handbook, in our case study: https://lnkd.in/gqCE_Fqj

🌏 Last week we held an insightful roundtable on decarbonisation in Bedfordshire. It was a privilege to gather with industry leaders from Central Bedfordshire Council, Bedford Borough Council, Luton Borough Council, University of Bedfordshire, Bidwells, and bpha to discuss pressing challenges and opportunities in our journey towards a greener future. Some highlights from the discussion include: ✅ Data and measurement: Participants stressed the importance of data in understanding carbon emissions, energy usage, and the effectiveness of decarbonisation efforts. ✅ Collaboration: This was a recurring theme of the day, with participants emphasising the importance of working together across sectors and communities to tackle complex decarbonisation challenges. From integrating social value into planning applications to promoting youth engagement and education, it's clear that shared responsibility and action are key to driving meaningful change. ✅ Skills development and education: The discussion touched upon the importance of developing green skills and upskilling individuals to meet the demands of a sustainable future. Participants highlighted the need for inclusive growth, education initiatives, and collaboration with institutions like housing associations to address the skills gap and ensure a workforce capable of driving sustainability forward. 🌟 As we reflect on the discussion, it's evident that there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Each organisation and individual has a unique role to play in our collective efforts towards a sustainable future. Let's continue to collaborate, innovate, and take meaningful action to build a greener future for the construction industry. 🌿 Nature is a key stakeholder in the development of #infrastructure and #realestate. Big corporations are already integrating nature into their business decisions, but for small and medium enterprises #SMEs, it can be a challenge to navigate all the new regulations and requirements.🌱 The good news is that help is at hand! Over the last few months, myself and a handful of expert colleagues from peer consultancies have been working with the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) to produce the #NatureGuide: it supports non-nature professionals to make informed decisions regarding #natureanddevelopment.🌳 Learning the new #policy landscape can be daunting, but with this guide to hand, avenues to embed nature and biodiversity roll clearly into view. 🍃 Nature must be seen as the enabler and opportunity partner for project success. A scheme can really benefit from nature and biodiversity – better health of users and better resilience to climate impacts, to name just a couple.🌼 The way we build has changed, and nature is at the table with the planning and design team now. Whether you’re a nature professional or not, nature is a voice you can’t ignore any more. #nature #biodiversity #realestate #development #sustainability AECOM - Environmental Services #SustainableLegacies #ForNature Thank you, Team! We’re very pleased that CEFC Head of Property Michael Di Russo is on the Green Building Council of Australia Green Star advisory committee for 2024-25. The internationally recognised Green Star rating system sets the standard for healthy, resilient, positive buildings and places. We see it as an important tool for demonstrating the #sustainability performance of our built environment as Australia transitions to #netzero emissions. https://lnkd.in/g7RNFYF5
We don't play favourites, but the class of 2024-25 is a great one. GBCA's governance committee and supporting advisory groups are invaluable to the Green Star rating system and the work the GBCA does to stay Australia's leading holistic rating tool for the buildings and communities you work, sleep, create and play in. We are incredibly excited to work with these committee members for the next few years.
