Wessex Water chief executive Colin Skellett outlines the problems facing Britain’s under-fire water sector – and what the industry should be doing next The UK's National Infrastructure Commission has concluded that we need significantly more investment in new water resources, sewers and mains. The current run rate of infrastructure replacement assumes an implied asset life for water mains of 400 years and sewers of 800 years. At the moment the public, the press and therefore the politicians, are exercised about nutrients in rivers and combined sewer overflows. What will be squeezed again from 2025 is infrastructure investment. We at Wessex are developing an alternative framework for water and the natural environment. We have seen great enthusiasm from NGOs and other stakeholders to work with us in co-creating a potential model for delivering low carbon, sustainable solutions to the current challenges. We believe our innovative ideas will ultimately benefit all stakeholders: customers, the environment and investors to deliver a better, low carbon future for water.
