"This essay, on the one hand, looks into the nexus between climate change and political economy in Africa, and on the other hand, the prospect of popular protest movement for climate action in Africa. The essay tries to identify and classify various forms of protest movement related to climate action, and the social forces that can play important role in coalescing such protest movement in Africa. A study involving a survey and review of climate-related protests across Africa was carried out to support this essay. The result shows that a preponderant of protests are based on indirect impacts of climate change vis-a-vis environmental pollution from emission-causing industrial activities (fossil fuel production and mining) and economic and social impact of capitalist climate solution vis-a-vis land grab by big multinational farms and biofuel producers and carbon offsetting programmes. The paper concludes by highlighting what needed to be done in order to integrate direct or main climate change themes into mainstream of social and popular protest movements in Africa." This video provides a brief overview of the Caribbean Climate Justice and Resilience Agenda, which outlines 8 priority areas for action by 2030. These priorities not only meet the Paris Agreement’s goals, but the needs of vulnerable groups and wider civil society in the Caribbean region. The Alliance includes over 40 civil society organisations, grassroots leaders and activists, academics, creatives, the media and other non-state actors working across different sectors to amplify the voices of those on frontlines to promote climate justice. Benin🇧🇯 is taking important steps to mainstream its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) across the country.  The communication and monitoring project for the implementation of Benin's NDC was launched at the end of last year with support from UN CC:Learn, the NDC Partnership, and other key stakeholders in the country. The project aims to simplify the language, engage with various stakeholders, and promote territorialization for effective grassroots climate action. Transforming Africa into a global powerhouse of the future, aligned with the AU's Agenda 2063, requires cohesive interventions across sectors like agriculture. To address the climate crisis that disproportionately affects Africa, the AU has prioritized resilience and adaptation. Endorsing the African Union Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy and Action Plan, along with the Green Recovery Action Plan, demonstrates the AU's commitment to climate action. We are pleased to announce the task force’s official name. We are the Global Solidarity Levies Task Force: For People and the Planet. By 2030, developing countries (excluding China) must mobilize $2.2 trillion each year to meet climate finance commitments and limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as set out in the #ParisAgreement. But right now, the poorest countries and communities are suffering the worst effects of #climatechange while contributing the least to the problem. The task force’s mandate is to change this by finding equitable sources of #climatefinance that make the biggest polluters contribute fairly. That’s why we’re bringing together a coalition of willing countries, undertaking extensive research and advancing political will for solidarity levies that can be implemented around the world. Take a look at the work of our partner, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) IIED is a global ‘think and do’ tank that works for economic and climate justice. For 50 years, IIED has been producing evidence-based policy solutions that address the root causes of poverty and inequality. One of the critical challenges that IIED is tackling is the hidden handbrakes on climate action. These are the systemic barriers that slow down progress on mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage, such as indirect sector subsidies and investor-state dispute settlements. These handbrakes need to be released to improve our chances of staying within 1.5°C of global warming. IIED is leading a programme on this work which aims to create greater visibility and debate around these barriers, and to advocate for deep reforms through a coordinated multilateral process. Our funding and support enables IIED to gain momentum, helping to realise the full potential of the movement.
