Striking research that illustrates a global AI-divide. If we look at where graphics processing units, or GPUs, are located, which are at the heart of running AI systems, we see these units concentrated in only 30 countries worldwide. This leaves the rest of the countries in what the research calls ‘’Compute Deserts.’’ AI access seems to reflect global inequalities along the ‘’so-called Global North and South.’’ Such a North-South divide makes the South reliant on the North when it comes to AI, leaving countries in the South without the ability to influence and shape AI research and development.
