Team SBA joined partners from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), USDA, and other agencies for Path to Prosperity - Southeast, a joint initiative designed to bring federal and other resources to rural and underserved communities across the country. SBA Southeast Regional Administrator Allen Thomas, District Director Mike Arriola, Rural Affairs Director Anna Lucas, Deputy Aregnaz Mooradian, and lender relations specialist Jason Woods brought the collective expertise of the SBA to the hybrid event which drew roughly 200 participants. Other SBA partners including The Women's Business Center of The Triad, SCORE Mentors NC Piedmont Triad, and NC SBTDC brought a wealth of small business expertise and relationship building as well. P2P was held at Greensboro's Gateway Research Center, a joint venture between University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Deputy Director Aregnaz Mooradian attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the Small Business Center at SPCC (South Piedmont Community College), an SBA ecosystem partner. The college will host the Small Business Center at its new Center for Entrepreneurship, a first of its kind in Union County, NC. This facility has been a dream for local leaders since 2017, and involved the collaboration of many levels of government and community organizations. With North Carolina leading in new business generation, this investment will support small businesses move from start-up to scale-up mode faster and with greater ease. We are excited to be part of such a dynamic and growing small business ecosystem here in North Carolina! #entrepreneur #ecosystem #smallbusiness

The U.S. Department of the Treasury held its annual Freedman’s Bank Forum featuring U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo, Governor Roy Cooper, Biden-Harris Administration officials, and key leaders from the public, private, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors. The Forum highlighted the Administration’s continued efforts to increase economic opportunity for communities of color and spotlight local success stories in and around Raleigh, N.C., home to one of 19 original Freedman’s Bank branches. The Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company was established in 1865 to provide newly emancipated Black Americans with the financial tools to safeguard their earnings, build financial security, and generate family wealth. In 2015, then Treasury Secretary Jack Lew christened the Treasury Annex building, which was built on the site of the “Freedman’s Bank Building” and launched an annual conference to showcase strategies to address racial economic disparities. The Raleigh convening marked the first time the forum met outside of Washington DC. SBA North Carolina District Director Mike Arriola welcomed fellow alum Wally Adeyemo, White House Director for Public Engagement and former Columbia SC Mayor Steve Benjamin, and others to North Carolina. Shaw University President Dr. Paulette Dillard hosted the convening at Mother Shaw, the second oldest HBCU in the country and the oldest in the South.
