Aspiring to set a new standard for sustainable mining with U.S. critical minerals for the clean energy future

About us

Located in an historic mining district in the Patagonia Mountains of Southern Arizona, South32’s Hermosa Project is the only advanced mine development project in the United States as of 2024 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals—manganese and zinc—both of which are essential minerals for powering the nation’s clean energy future. Hermosa’s mineral resources also include silver and lead, which are essential for harnessing renewable energy. Our aspiration for the Hermosa Project is to: ✅ Set a new standard for sustainable mining. ✅ Strengthen the domestic supply chain of critical minerals. ✅ Grow the local economy. ✅ Improve lives in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding community.

💫 Expanding young minds starts with access to great books. 📚 For some families, even a library trip can be a challenge. Enter the Santa Cruzer 🚌 ! The Cruzer is a mobile library that will bring books directly to families and in the hopes to eliminate one of the biggest barriers for kids’ access to books. The Hermosa project is committed to making a positive difference in our communities, and that’s why we are so proud to support this mobile library. Huge thanks to Santa Cruz County for letting us be a part of this inspiring community project!

As automakers continue the shift towards building out all-electric vehicle options, the minerals essential to the batteries powering them are becoming ever more important. "The thing that's really critical about Hermosa is the opportunity we have to create domestic supply chains, but in doing so, really lift up communities and set a new standard.” That’s what Hermosa President Pat Risner emphasized at National Clean Energy Week’s 2024 Policy Symposium in Washington D.C., speaking to the importance of generating a reliable, domestic supply of the critical minerals needed to power a coming wave of electric vehicles, while making sure the communities home to these resources can benefit in the process. Honored to help build a domestic supply chain for the batteries America needs to power our future. Huge thanks to the DOE Manufacturing & Energy Supply Chains Office (MESC) for their support!

Batteries 🔋 power so much of our everyday lives, from the phones in our hands to the cars we drive to the energy that powers our homes and businesses. Building a domestic supply chain for batteries is critical to ensuring a stable, reliable energy future for America. That is why @MESC-DOE is proud to announce over $3 billion for 25 projects across 14 states! These projects will help boost domestic production of advanced batteries and battery materials. This isn’t just good news for our day-to-day energy resilience—it’s also good for the American workforce. At full scale, these projects will generate 8,000 new construction jobs and over 4,000 new operating jobs. Now that’s how you (em)power the future! 📣 We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been selected to enter negotiations for a $166 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing program. The funds will help advance the development of a state-of-the-art, commercial-scale manganese production facility that will bolster the nation’s effort to create reliable domestic supply chains of materials crucial for powering electric vehicle (EV) batteries and other energy storage technologies. Today’s announcement comes on the heels of a $20 million Department of Defense grant earlier this year to accelerate the domestic production of battery-grade manganese. As the only fully integrated domestic source of battery-grade manganese for EV batteries, the Hermosa project is uniquely positioned to strengthen U.S. energy security while creating economic growth and family-sustaining jobs in our local community. The federal government’s Permitting Council wants to better educate the public about what they do. Their new video explains how FAST-41 promotes and improves coordination, transparency, and accountability in the permitting process. As the first, and currently only, mining project participating in the FAST-41 process, Hermosa had to meet rigorous criteria and demonstrate our benefit to the nation. One aspect of FAST-41 that we really appreciate is the transparency available to the public with regards to our own permitting process via the Federal Permitting Dashboard. “There has been no manganese ore mining in the United States since the 1970s, and the US is now 100% reliant on foreign sources for manganese. The Hermosa project can help fill that void,” explains our President Pat Risner in Global Business Reports (GBR)’s new 2024-25 Western USA Mining report. This year’s report also includes a feature of Hermosa , highlighting South32’s recent decision to invest $2.16 billion into the project, as well as it’s unique position as the first mining project to participate in the federal government’s FAST-41 program, aimed at increasing transparency and collaboration in the permitting process for projects deemed critical to national security. You can access and view the pre-release of this year’s report by using this link: https://lnkd.in/e6T86RH7 _____ “No ha habido extracción de mineral de manganeso en Estados Unidos desde la década de 1970, y Estados Unidos ahora depende 100% de fuentes extranjeras de manganeso. El proyecto Hermosa puede ayudar a llenar ese vacío”, explica nuestro presidente Pat Risner en el nuevo informe 2024-25 Western USA Mining de Global Business Reports (GBR).
