Southern Arizona’s businesses are national leaders in innovation and technology. It was great to join the conversation at this year’s Southern Arizona Tech and Business Expo, hosted by the Arizona Technology Council, to explore our region’s promising future and the contributions of projects like Hermosa. While there, our project President Pat Risner shared how Hermosa’s advanced technologies and sustainable practices, including our remote operations center, serve as innovative examples in mining. These efforts will bolster the local economy and provide domestic supplies of resources needed to power innovative clean energy technologies.

“As we develop a mining operation that will help our country with such lofty goals to address the existential challenge that’s climate change, we have to do things differently, in a more sustainable way” - Pat Risner, South32 Hermosa President at the University of Arizona, Eller College of Management Collegiate Ethics Case Competition During the two-day Ethics Competition, students from 27 universities are challenged to think of ways in which they can be morally ethical and socially responsible regarding a tough business case. These competitions are teaching the leaders of tomorrow the many facets of decision-making and the consequences that their decisions may have to increase awareness in corporate social responsibility. As a panelist at two key events—the Earthshot Foundation and OurEnergyPolicy’s Restoring Trust in Mining, and the Permitting Council’s session on the FAST-41 permitting process—Judy highlighted the power of transparency, predictability, and inclusivity at Hermosa. By focusing on these pillars, we’re not only bolstering local economic growth but also strengthening our nation’s energy security. 💫 Expanding young minds starts with access to great books. 📚 For some families, even a library trip can be a challenge. Enter the Santa Cruzer 🚌 ! The Cruzer is a mobile library that will bring books directly to families and in the hopes to eliminate one of the biggest barriers for kids’ access to books. The Hermosa project is committed to making a positive difference in our communities, and that’s why we are so proud to support this mobile library. Huge thanks to Santa Cruz County for letting us be a part of this inspiring community project!

As automakers continue the shift towards building out all-electric vehicle options, the minerals essential to the batteries powering them are becoming ever more important. "The thing that's really critical about Hermosa is the opportunity we have to create domestic supply chains, but in doing so, really lift up communities and set a new standard.” That’s what Hermosa President Pat Risner emphasized at National Clean Energy Week’s 2024 Policy Symposium in Washington D.C., speaking to the importance of generating a reliable, domestic supply of the critical minerals needed to power a coming wave of electric vehicles, while making sure the communities home to these resources can benefit in the process.
